Countdown 24

All three Curls books are on sale for 25% off on ravelry or payhip with the code COUNTDOWN (it works for any or all of the books, just put whatever you want in your cart at once if you want more than one of them).

These books are why I’m doing this.  Well, let me explain.  These books were popular enough that they made me brave enough to actually say, out loud, in front of other people, that I was going to do this full time as my real job.

Now to be fair, I was a grad student at the time, which is not a particularly flush lifestyle.  And I was trying to become a historian, which is…well…which is basically dooming yourself to penury and overflowing bookcases.  But it still took a bit of courage to say ‘nope, I am going to abandon this socially acceptable career path and instead take pictures of pretty string and sell folks instructions for tying their own string into equally pretty knots.’

But so far, the plan seems to be working out well.  Thank you so much to everyone who has come along on this long, strange adventure with me.  I love that this is what I get to do!

Fine Things for Plain Occasions is on sale for 25% off on ravelry or payhip with the code COUNTDOWN.

Every once in a great long while you get a chance to do something exactly how you want with absolutely no thought for whether anyone else will be as amused by it as you are.  That’s what this book was for me.  Knitting patterns inspired by vintage etiquette books? Yup! Hardback book with a freaking ribbon bookmark because your inner six year old knows that ribbon bookmarks marks are the best thing in the world? Of course! Photos taken on a gloomy day in a slightly gothic mansion? Obviously! Don’t tell the other books, but this one is secretly my favorite!

Countdown 22

Silk Road Socks is on sale for 25% off on ravelry or payhip with the code COUNTDOWN.

This is where it started.  Well, sort of.  Silk Road Socks was my very first book, many many years ago.  But I published it with someone else (mostly because I didn’t realize publishing books all by yourself was something a person could actually do, and I certainly not something I could actually do).  And as I have always had more opinions than sense and I do not play well with others, I was never quite happy with the first version of the book.  It went out of print, and the rights reverted to me.  By then, I had learned that publishing books by yourself was indeed something a person could do, was indeed something I could do, so I decided I’d bring it back and make it what I wanted it to be all along. I love everything about it!

These were my first books. Well, these were the first books I published myself. The first ones where I said, “look, if I’m going to do this thing, I’m going to do it…all of it.” And I will forever have a soft spot for them.

I mean yes, I do wish I’d been brave enough to put the ‘volume I’ on the first one (I knew I was damn well going to do three of them, and everyone told me not to risk that on a first book, and I wish I hadn’t listened).

But if that is my biggest regret about them, well, that seems pretty manageable!

Countdown 20

Firmament is on sale for 25% off on ravelry or payhip with the code COUNTDOWN.

That thing? That thing where you played with a nifty technique for one pattern, but you’re serious not done with it, so then you make another pattern. And another. And another. And then you’re still not done so you sort of secretly come up with variations for each of those patterns and sneak them in all quiet like hoping maybe no one will notice. Yeah…this book is what happens when you do that thing.  It started with one simple little hat, but good grief it was too much fun to abandon after just one.  So…well…I did a bunch more.  Still not sorry.

Countdown 19

Shoreland Socks is on sale for 25% off on ravelry or payhip with the code COUNTDOWN.

This is my most recent book…and it’s almost certainly my last book for a while. I’ve done at least one book a year, every year, since 2011.  Taking away that structure this year felt really odd (a book takes about a year to create, and for the last nine years I mostly measured time by which book I was planning, writing, releasing, or promoting at any given time). Given the Series of Exciting Global Catastrophes that 2020 brought, it was probably really good that I wasn’t trying to manage a book this year (I get really really stressed when things don’t go according to my schedule, and there is no chance that the huge number of moving parts invovled in making a book happen would have stayed on schedule, no matter how hard I tried).  But if one of them has to be the last one, I’m glad it was this one.  Those are my husband’s feet on the front cover.  I took that picture while he perched on a rock I can see out my office window when the tide is out.  My friends modeled for me, both in my back yard and at my favorite local beach. And the patterns are all socks, which were my first knitting love. It feels like a good place to leave things (at least for a while)!

Somehow I’ve gotten out of the habit of doing stand alone mitts.  Not out of the habit of knitting mitts you understand.  I’ve got piles of them (literal piles, by the back door and by my desk for when my hands get cold while I’m typing and in my coat pockets and in the back seat of the car and probably somewhere else I’m not remembering).  But lately I’ve been doing hat and mitt sets (because matching my hat to my mitts is about the closest I come to paying attention to fashion) instead of just mitts by themselves.  And really? mitts by themselves are awesome.  Or at least these ones are.  Though now that I look at them, I’m suddenly filled with the urge to make a matching hat to go with them…

Permutation is on sale for 25% off on ravelry or payhip with the code COUNTDOWN.

This is, as far as I can recall, the only proper colorwork I’ve ever done (usually I limit myself to the stuff where you work with one color per row and manage everything else through delightfully sneaky slipped stitches).  That’s mostly because asking me to keep track of two yarns per row is almost certain to end in bloodshed or tears (not necessarily mine).  But this is so damn nifty that I just couldn’t help myself.  Did it convert me to a colorwork fan? Nope. Did I manage it without becoming permanently enmeshed in a spiderweb of yarn and doom? Apparently.  Am I pretty sure that if I can manage it, you can? Oh absolutely!

Countdown 16

Penchant is on sale for 25% off on ravelry or payhip with the code COUNTDOWN.

This is what happens when you have so much fun with hat one that you do not want to stop.  But then you also do not want to actually knit the exact same thing a second time. So you tweak just a few very tiny things and somehow get a marvelously different end result.  It’s also the piece of knitting that had me saying zooooooooooom and swooooooooooszh and vwoooooooooop basically non stop as the swoopy lines on it revealed themselves.  Which probably won’t happen to you because you are probably much more successful at pretending to be a grownup.  But I figure if you’re still here at this point, the idea of me making silly noises over my knitting will not be the thing to finally drive you away. Probably. Hopefully. We’ll see.

(Pssst, this is a reminder that some time in January I’m taking most of the patterns that should have been two separate patterns to begin with and raising the prices on them to better reflect that they’re really a set of patterns. I do not have a full list of which patterns I’m doing that to, but if you look at it and think ‘hmmm, that appears to be a hat and a fingerless mitt’ or ‘hmmm, that appears to be several completely different hats’ there’s a darn good chance it’ll be changing. I only mention this so you can grab it now if you’ve been meaning to but putting it off.)

Do I expect you to make it in these colors? No. No I do not. I expect that you have infinitely better taste and a much more developed fashion sense. But I was making them for a baby. And you can put basically anything on a baby’s head and it’s adorable (plus they’re a baby, they can’t fight back very well yet).  So I embraced my inner chaos muppet and went a little outside my usual color palette.  You can do something all tasteful and sedate and refined.  I mean you don’t have to. But you can.  (Oh and don’t worry, it comes in the traditional massive range of sizes…just because I happened to knit it for a small person doesn’t mean you have to the same thing!)
