Summer School, Thick and Cozy, Marooned
On Monday we talked a bit about yarn and gauge for thick socks, and for the rest of the week I’ll be showing off some of my personal favorites.
These are Marooned. They are the perfect way to spotlight beautiful hand dyed yarns (those floats break up pooling and give the yarn extra room to shine), and they’re 25% off on ravelry with the code SUMMER SCHOOL through the end of the day, eastern time, Wednesday July 8.
I finished these almost exactly seven years ago, they are one of my favorite (read ‘most worn’) pairs, and they are still going strong. This is part of the reason I secretly (not so secretly) love thick socks best. Knit them right (that means knit them tight), and they last forever! Seriously, the oldest and most often worn socks in my sock basket are the thick ones (and they need the fewest repairs). I really am convinced they’re magic.
This is another example of smaller stitch repeats being easier to scale up. Just like yesterday, this stitch is only 6 stitches wide (someone always gets nervous that the floats will get caught on things, but they only run for three stitches, and they’re anchored in place with twisted stitches, so they really really don’t). Once again it’s in oodles of sizes (54, 60, 66, 72, 78, or 84 stitches around) and the math’s all done for working at 7, 8, or 9 stitches per inch, so you’ll almost certainly be able find a size/gauge combo that will give you the socks you’re dreaming of!
i kept meaning to ask if you’d had anyone else (well but me..) who was concerned about shoving all those ‘yarn lines’ into a shoe? i have visions of them popping and the sock unravelling in wierd ways. might make these for me but only To Wear At Home. so i did Wrack for our 50th ann. btw if i make it to 135 plus (approx time needed to knit my stash), my DH feels it will be your sock patterns that keep what brain i have agile!!my ability at times to do something backwards or in the wrong order causes many dirty kitty words…
I’ve been shoving them in my shoes for seven years now and mine are fine…
