Summer School – Colorwork – Permutation
Published On: July 19, 2019

I’m taking a bit of time off this month, but I wanted to make sure you had something to do while I’m napping (or, more likely, sweeping out the garage, getting drywall dust  out of my cabinets, or planning next year’s projects…but napping sounds better).

On Mondays, I’ll introduce a topic or skill and provide a bunch of links and resources to help you learn more. Later in the week, I’ll show off a few favorite patterns so you can do some homework.  The featured patterns will be on sale for one day each, so come back each weekday to see if there’s something that catches your eye!

Alright, we talked about two of my favorite ways to cheat at colorwork (slip the stitches out front or make really tiny tweaks to stripes). And we talked about a way to flirt with proper colorwork (three stitches…just three stitches…that barely even counts).  So it seems only fair to show you the one thing I ever did that might almost…almost count as proper colorwork.  It’s Permutation, and it’s still not giving in and doing things the right way.

So this pattern actually includes a few dozen variations on a hat.  The colorwork is totally optional (you can work with two colors, like the gray and brown hats, or just one, like the purple hat).

But if you do decide to do it, you have a lot of control over just exactly how you do it (and for how long).  You can do the Fiddly Evil Colorwork Rows (cough…I’m biased…they’re not all that bad I’m just a wimp) every other row, every fourth row, or even less often.  You can do them over the whole hat or just part of the hat.

No matter what you do, it’s going to be amazing (seriously, this is one where I have to encourage you to look at the projects people have posted on ravelry…there are a few there that flat out take my breath away).  And you are absolutely totally the boss of your knitting…you’re in charge, and you’re calling all the shots!

Permutation is 25% off just for today with the code SUMMER SCHOOL (technically, it’s 12:01 am to 11:59 pm eastern time on Friday, July 19, 2019 if you want to get very particular).  Come back Monday to listen to me say way way way too much about blocking!
