Teazle (plus giveaway)
Teazle is out today on ravelry, it’s 10% off with the code PRICKLY, and there’s yarn to give away later in this post!
So you knew it was going to happen…one day I was going to fall for brioche. And wow did I fall hard. This is my first brioche project, but I know for sure it won’t be the last (yes, yes there are more on the needles already).
Now we come to the potentially tricky bit. Because it is my first brioche project, I totally don’t feel comfortable claiming that I can teach you everything you need to know about brioche just yet. I want you coming into this with a little bit of basic background knowledge (sort of like how I expect you to know how to knit, purl, and yarn over for the rest of my patterns). For this one, you want to be able to work two color brioche in the round (the rest I’ll tell you how to do, but that I want you feeling confident with on your own). The good news is you can get to that point in like an hour of swatching and video watching (I love this one). Once you feel comfy with that, you’re golden!
You start with your basic ribbing (Translation: you do the easy bit early on while you get a feel for things). Then you work beautiful little seed pods (Translation: as soon as you’re just starting to get bored with the ribbing, you get to switch over to the fancy bits because really…those are super fun). You do as many sets of those as you like before switching back to ribbing (Translation: if you’re having fun, keep going…if you get a little scared, you only have to do them once and you can totally go back to the ribbing and have it look awesome). Then at the end, you work a very tidy crown (Translation: seriously, every brioche crown ever looks like magic, you owe it to yourself to do this at least once just because it’s so satisfying). You really are going to have fun with this!
And, just to make sure one of you has an awful lot of fun, I’ve got two skeins of the glorious Ontheround yarn I used for the orange hat to send off to one of you. If you think it should be you, leave a comment here telling me about something you were a little scared of but learned how to do anyway. It doesn’t have to be knitting related. Did you learn how to change out an electrical outlet? How to take public transit somewhere you don’t speak the language? How to make a really great soufflé? You folks are a talented lot and I want to hear what you’ve conquered!
And I totally can’t send yarn to all of you, but I can give everyone 10% off with the code PRICKLY. Just put Teazle in your cart, hit the coupon button, and type in PRICKLY. You’ll see the change right away (if that ever doesn’t work, double check your spelling…that solves about 99% of problems, if you’re still stumped, email me and we’ll sort it out!).
The code will work until the end of the day, eastern time, on Friday June 7. Comments left between now and the end of the day Friday, June 7 will be entered to win the yarn. You need to be an adult and to have a US mailing address. Some time next week, I’ll pick a winner and email them to ask for their mailing address (so please use a real email address…it won’t sign you up for any mailing lists or anything, but I will need it to contact the winner). I’ll need to hear back from whoever wins within 3 days of when I email them or I will pick another winner and contact them.
I remember learning to fly. It wasn’t so bad when you went up with the instructor since they were there to make sure you didn’t plummet to your death, but man oh man, I still vividly remember my first solo. I was shaking so hard during the preflight. But once I started the engine, it all kind of clicked into place. There was so much muscle memory, I felt confident rather than afraid.
Beautiful! I have to admit, I’ve never been scared to try anything Knit-wise. But when you mentioned public transit, you hit a chord…especially buses. Subways and sind seem to be easier … something about the tracks not moving … but I did figure out how to ride the bus when I lived in Austria for a year…despite being constantly scared that I was getting on the wrong one and always feeling the need to both hide at the back and sit right up front where I could try to keep track of the route and enlist the bus driver’s assistance in getting off st the correct stop!
Navigating my way around a large city on my own. I live in a small rural community and the closest big city is hours away. The first time I went alone was scary. Now, I love going by myself. I can explore at my pace (and go to all the yarn shops)
Probably the hardest thing I ever learned was how to drive a manual transmission after 15 years of driving an automatic so I could rent a car on an overseas vacation. It’s took a lot of tears but it was so worth it!!
One thing that I was scared about doing (but oh, I so wanted to do it) was traveling by myself. I started off with a weekend trip to Seattle, then got really brave and planned a 2 week trip to England. Okay, so I did stay with family friends for the first few days, but after that I struck out on my own. I had such a wonderful time. Planning the trip was half the joy, poring over things to see and do, figuring out where to stay and how to get around.
Since then I’ve gone to Ireland, Wales, Canada. Still haven’t ventured to any countries where English isn’t the first language though!
I’m not scared of brioche but it is SO tough for me. I don’t know how to fix my mistakes so I usually just tear everything out and start over if I make a big mistake. Ugh. So maybe I AM scared of it, a little. 😉
Thank you for the nice giveaway!
I have always wanted to try surfing, but living in Minnesota the surfing is not exactly nearby. So in 2013 I joined a week-long women’s-only surf camp in Costa Rica! One week didn’t make me a surfer, but it was fun to try it. And I was not eaten by a shark, so that was nice. 😉
Learning how to tape and mud drywall. And now I do a passable job of it. I would much rather be knitting brioche, however. Love your hat pattern.
June 7th is my birthday, so it would be fun to win. All the examples of hard things I had to learn that I can think of are parenting related. I almost feel like that doesn’t count though because you have to? You can’t not learn, right? I think doing child birth well is a great skill and accomplishment. I’m pregnant again so it’s on my mind in a sort of foreboding way. Oh, THAT is coming again. This will be my 9th and they have all been natural so I feel like I have this down but still…
Also, potty training, which I’m also currently working on. It’s scary, you don’t know how it will work, but you get through it and you’re much more knowledgeable the next time.
I guess I shouldn’t say that these automatically come with parenting. My husband definitely hasn’t conquered either of these. 🙂
I really like the contrast in two color brioche. It really makes the designs pop.
I recently learned how to repair a leaky water spigot and to replace a bathroom faucet. (The joys of home ownership…) Anyway, looking forward to continuing to improve my brioche technique with this lovely pattern!
My biggest fear I would have to say was becoming single and having to do everything by myself. So I forced myself to go out to the movies one day and on another day forced myself to go out to the diner to eat. That was quite a while ago but I still need to take myself out to a nice restaurant. I guess that will happen some day real soon. But I have to say that brioche was scary to me too and I finally gave it a try early this year, single color so far. I am really looking forward to knitting this hat. I 💖💗 it. 😁
Well, maybe this doesn’t seem like a big deal, but I learned how to take a flight all by myself. I traveled for many years, but always with someone else who was “in charge”. So when I was 62 and needed to fly by myself for the first time it was terrifying. But I did it. Haven’t done it since, but I guess I could do it again if I have to.
Boy, I guess you could say almost everyday there is something Im scared about doing. Usually what happens is the worry is completely wasted and what ever you think will happen never does. I looked at a brioche book once and the the crazy abbreviations kept me from trying it. Still hoping to try it sometime, however-many beautiful patterns
Love your new pattern! I can do plain brioche (no increases or decreases yet), so this will be the perfect next step for me! The last thing I was scared to learn but did was driving a manual transmission car. This was quite some time ago. I knew how to drive an automatic and had been for years. Suddenly, for an array of reasons, I was suddenly going to have to drive a manual transmission car across Pennsylvania for my job. I did not want to, but had to. I spent the afternoon before the big drive lurching and cursing around on some back roads. Then the next day I got where I needed to go OK. But I was freaked out the whole way there and back!
Knitting in the round using the magic loop method…refused to give up & finally found a tutorial that clicked with me. Driving (which, to this day still stresses the living daylights out of me). I cannot wait to cast on for this pattern. I have been anxiously waiting for its release. It’s stunning!
I was terrified of thunderstorms. Even as an adult/mother of two kiddos. When we bought our house and my husband had to go back to work we had a massive storm while he was gone. I had to *fake* not being terrified for the kids not to become the same. Ever since I did that I have loved watching thunderstorms.
This is so beautiful. I’ve just learned brioche and it’s actually fun. I would love to knit this hat.
Stranded knitting. Like brioche, it’s not nearly as difficult as I had convinced myself it would be.
Oh my goodness it’s sooooo beautiful I would LOVE to win.
xoxo
I was pretty scared about setting up my own business, but am loving every minute of it. Beautiful hat!
Just when I thought I had conquered my recent hat knitting addiction, this great looking pattern appeared. Welcome to the queue, Teazle.
I love both these color combos. I have been wanting to try brioche, but, like you, I’ve been worried it will be too hard.
I can’t see my earlier comment, so apologies if this is a duplicate, but I wanted to say that your color combos (as always) are so lovely. I want to try brioche but I’m scare it will be hard or difficult to put down and pick back up (key for a knitter with many small children!).
Love the brioche, I was scared to ride a motorcycle but my husband taught me and know we ride over five thousand miles on our motorcycles every year for our vacation.
Nice hat pattern…. I’ve listened to some Brioche podcasts and have been wanting to try it on a small starter project. This Hat seems like a worthwhile project to try. I can remember learning to drive a stick shift car. I remember stalling out at stop signs. Then I had to drive it in rush hour traffic to work!! That really forces you to learn it.
