Calceiform (plus giveaway)
So those slippers? The ones that somehow manage to make even my somewhat…ah…substantial feet look very nearly shapely and elegant? Yeah, they’re called Calceiform, and they’re out on ravelry today! You can get them for 10% off for the next day or two with the code SHAPELY.
I just love how you put these together. You start by knitting a heel flap and heel turn, just like you’d do for many top down socks. then you pick up stitches around the heel flap and knit back and forth making all the pretty lacy bits, until the slipper almost wraps around your foot. Then you do some decreases (it’s a lot like how you’d do a gusset on socks, just moved a bit farther down your foot), join it all up to work in the round, and zip on down to the toe.
The whole thing feels easy and familiar like a sock…but oh so much quicker (both because the yarn is thicker and because you’re making less fabric than you get in a sock). And of course the finished slipper is ridiculously fetching…I just can’t get over the adorable little leaves on the toe!
I’ve got a skein of the lovely Opulence DK by String Theory that I used to make these to give away. I bought two back when I found the yarn, but managed to get a pair for my rather substantial feet out of just one skein with enough left over that I wasn’t nervous, so I’ve got an extra skein to give to someone.
Just leave a comment on this post telling me about your favorite pair of slippers. They don’t have to be knit…fuzzy bunny slippers totally count too. I just want to know I’m not alone in feeling like slippers make the world better!
And if you’re ready for a new pair of slippers, the pattern itself is up on ravelry. You can use the code SHAPELY until the end of the day, Friday July 20 (eastern time) to take 10% off.
Comments left between now and the end of the day (eastern time) Friday, July 20, 2018 will be entered to win. I’ll pick a winner, contact them to get their addresses, and arrange to send the yarn their way. Be sure to use a real email address so I can contact you if you’ve won (I won’t do anything with those email addresses besides notify the winner). If I do email you, I need to hear back from you within 72 hours or I will pick a new winner and contact them. This is open to adults anywhere in the world, but I need a US mailing address to send yarn to.
My favorite pair of slippers matches those that mu best friend has! They’re very plain, it is just nice to think of her whenever I put them on. 🙂
I love slippers in general, these in particular! The shaping is really nice. Dumb question. Looking through the pattern quickly – when you describe a right leaning purl decrease, that means it leans right on the *other* side, correct? Just trying to picture it in my mind. Anyway, thanks for a classy looking pattern.
I am very fond of a pair of pink fabric slippers with white fuzzy interiors that I kept at my in-laws’ house across the country. I loved knowing that I never had to pack slippers when we traveled to see them. When we helped clear out their house, I brought the slippers home with me.
I’ve been waiting for these since they first popped up on your IG feed! Gorgeous – into the queue they go. (:
Love, love, love these beautiful slippers! Great design. My favorite slippers are a pair of fuzzy flip-flops in a bright melon color.
Oops, forgot to answer the prompt, I was so excited to see these up! Hm. My favorite pair of slippers is a tie between my Footies (hand-knit, free Rav pattern) and some big sloppy handknit socks from an aran weight that I love to pad around in when it’s really cold. But my Calceiforms will probably take both their places!
I generally don’t wear slippers because I’ve never found ones I liked. So I walk around the house in old socks…LOL! But I’ve been wanting these since I saw them on your needles on Instagram…so happy that I can now get the pattern! Can’t wait to cast on….
Very elegant slippers.
These are lovely! and I’d love to win that skein of yarn – it’s gorgeous. My favorite slippers are some that my husband bought for me, little furry white booties, because they match my little furry white dog, Petunia! Wish I could show you her picture…
My favorite slippers are the kind that are like socks. Your lovely new pattern speaks my language. I can’t wait to give them a try!
I love slip on slippers because they are easiest to wear with my hand knit socks but the Calcieform slippers are the best of both worlds!
I’m off to Ravelry!
Smizylknitz
I love my little “ballerina” satin slippers with the leather soles during the warm months. But when it’s cooler, I want something up around my ankles, and the fuzzier the better!
My favorite slippers are old Crocs. I’ve never knitted slippers before, but these look warm, soft and much, much prettier!
I love slippers but the ones I’ve bought always feel too tight, or too loosey-goosey, or just don’t stay on my feet. I never thought about knitting some slippers for myself and now I’m going to. That way they can fit my feet and be pretty and just the way I like them. I love the pattern and am so excited to try it!
My favorite pair of slippers are these hard buttoned fuzzy slippers that come winter hardly ever leave my feet. Because they look and act like shoes it constantly amused .edu that I’m technically going out in my slippers to walk the dog or go to the store. I know I shouldn’t…but the fact I can well the tiny rebellious side of me is just amused by it all and does it anyway.
Love slippers of all kinds. Those would be quick to make for entryway slippers in conjunction with our new carpet, as loaners only!
My favorite pair of slippers are a slip on pair that were my dad’s. Even though his feet were a lot bigger they are the most comforting slippers I have ever had and a memory of my dad who passed away unexpectedly at 56 just over 20 years ago.
Love how beautiful this pattern is in the luscious dk yarn.
My aunt used to knit me a pair those old school slippers that are knit flat and sewn together. I loved how cozy they were, but they never stayed on very well and the ridges were uncomfortable on the bottoms of my feet. But i loved them because she made them. In January i made a pair of your excursion slippers and fell in love❤ soft warm slipper hugs. I’ve just finished a second pair😎 no uncomfortable ridges and a perfect fit. I’m excited to give this new pattern a go! Thank you!
I love these slippers. I am looking forward to making myself a pair of these ! I love slippers in the cooler months, I’m usually barefoot in the warmer months when I’m at home. My favorite slippers are the super-soft squishy slipper socks (like cabin socks).
I had some wonderful sherpa-lined suede slippers with rubber soles that I wore in and around the house, shopping, errands, to and from cycling events, everywhere, for – yikes! about 30 years – before something finally succeeded in chewing out all the wool (but I guess 30 years was a pretty good run). I tried to repace it using an industrial sewing machine, but it didn’t quite work. Though I was heartbroken, I refrained from giving them a funeral.
I am having surgery this summer and won’t be doing much walking or cycling for quite a while, so these will be a perfect, pretty way to keep my feet cozy.
Favorite slippers: felted ones that I’ve made multiple times. They can be nested and worn double for when it’s really chilly or just single in the summer. Love the wool cause it doesn’t create static build-up like synthetic slippers and my feet don’t sweat. Pattern: Trim Clogs
I hate shoes but love my sheepskin booties in the winter. It gets cold in New England and they are so toasty. On really cold nights, soft bed socks are a most.
But I love the look of these slippers -I might just have to try them out.
My favorite pair of store bought slippers have Winnie the Pooh’s face on them. They just make me smile. But these may just bump poor Pooh aside. Thanks for the code, gone to download them now.
Love my Lamo scuffs…they keep my toes warm in rainy Oregon winters! Looking forward to knitting your Calceiform pattern, it is lovely!
I wear knitted slippers all the time! I love them, but mine are not as pretty as yours. I love this new pattern. My favorite slippers are knit out of 4 strands of leftover sock yarn. I use up all those little balls of leftover sock yarn to knit my slippers. They are warm and comfy and a zillion different colours.
