Ostensibly (plus giveaway)
I’m a grown up. I am. I have the paperwork to prove it. But somehow…somehow my reaction to this hat makes me question just how much of an adult I really am. It’s called Ostensibly, and you can get it on ravelry for 10% off with the code ALLEGED.
I can’t decide if it’s the rainbow colors, or the pompom (or the other pompom, or the other other pompom), or the blatant refusal to weave in my ends, but this one feels like about the farthest thing from being grown up I can imagine.
And I’m not even a little bit sorry. Nope, not one bit. If you have to pick somewhere to flagrantly flout responsible adulthood, your knitting is probably a fine choice. And I’m more than happy to help you do it!
The pattern has all the bits you’d expect (like how to make the hat), but also includes info on all the not-so-grown up things I love about it…how to make all three of those pompoms (and how to make them detachable) and how to braid your ends instead of weaving them in. There’s even some discussion of how to sub in slightly more subdued colors if you’re in the mood for something more sedate.
But, for those of you loving the colors, I’m going to make one of you very happy. Rachel over at Ontheround is going to send yarn off to a lucky someone. I used her Everyday DK in Silver Lining Tweed for the background, and the Everyday Lite in Silver Lining Rainbow for the contrast. She’ll send someone yarn to do the same. All you need to do to enter is leave a comment telling me the most colorful thing you ever knit. Are you a fan of neon socks? Outrageous hats? Do you have a scrap yarn blanket on the needles? There’s no right or wrong answer, I just like to know what you guys make!
And for everyone I can’t send yarn to, you can get Ostensibly for 10% off with the code ALLEGED. Just put Ostensibly in your ravelry cart, click on the ‘use a coupon code’ button, and type in the code ALLEGED. You’ll see the change in price reflected right away.
Comments left between now and the end of the day (eastern time) Friday, June 22, 2018 will be entered to win. I’ll pick a winner, contact them to get their addresses, and arrange to send the yarn their way. Be sure to use a real email address so I can contact you if you’ve won (I won’t do anything with those email addresses besides notify the winner). If I do email you, I need to hear back from you within 72 hours or I will pick a new winner and contact them. This is open to people anywhere in the world, but I need a US mailing address to send yarn to.
Right now I have a small shawl on needles made of two different Crystal Palace Mini Mochi gradients, one in golds/reds and the other in purples/blues. When my sister saw the yarns, she said, “You are braver than I am.” I say, ‘haha, it’s only knitting.’ Besides, I think it will look amazing.
Love this hat! My most colorful knit is an Acer sweater in an almost neon glowy green-yellow with teal corrugated ribbing and blue glass buttons. My most colorful WIP is “Woman must make her own arrows” with stripes in hot pink, turquoise, lime green, and mustard against a pretty speckled background.
Currently working on a mitered square blanket with a rainbow of colors! So fun!
Knee high rainbow socks . They are so pretty they never get worn
Love the hat and the yarn. The most colourful thing I ever knit was a blanket. It had 23 colours in it, all of them bright!
I love neon socks! I am knitting through the Regia Fluormania socks. I have finished the Neon Rainbow and Neon Ocean colorways. Thank you Rachel and Hunter for the lovely giveaway.
The hat is beautiful! I often knit baby booties in bright colors.
Well, my most colourful knit I would say is my Comfort Fade Cardigan …. it’s very bright which makes me think colourful. But for variety in colours, it would have to be my ongoing Cozy Memories blanket.
Thank You for the opportunity to win & Thank You for the coupon code!
Oh man, that is just adorable. The pom poms are so perfect! I knit quite a lot of colorful things, but the most colorful project I’ve done was a Fair Isle leftovers cowl with tons of bright sock yarns that I made inspired by my Grammie who taught me to knit and passed last year at the age of 100. For better and sometimes worse, ha!, she wasn’t afraid of putting any colors or number of colors together. 🙂
It’s been fun watching the progress of Ostensibly on ig. Then you make not one, not two, but three poms! Why not? The most colorful things I knit are socks, but I hope to knit a couple of yoke sweaters this fall.
I knit a Baby Surprise Jacket out of a self striping yarn that was so neon you can still see the sweater from space.
I watched you make this hat on IG and fell in love! 😍 I generally stick to jewel tones for myself but I made my mom a bright pinky purple (mc) Theme & Variation with a wildly coloured speckled (cc). It’s her favourite shawl.
Love this pattern, and the beautiful yarn!! Right now I’m working on a baby blanket for a friend and it is very much in line with these colors. Almost eerily so. And I started it ages ago so it’s one of those funny universe things. It’s a stripey mitred square affair w gray as the neutral, a pinky orange, happy yellow, spring green, lavender, and blue as the alternating contrasts. It’s great fun.
Fun hat, and I love how the pompoms came out! Probably the most colorful thing I’ve knit is a shawl made with Gale’s Art Graffiti on Asphalt. Multi with very short color blips. Happy Summer!
My most colorful thing I made is a fade sweater using 7 or 8 different colors of Spun Right Round. Second place goes to a Stephen West shawl using lots of bits and pieces of different yarns.
Everything I knit seems to be full of colour. As a ginger, green is always my go to…particularly lime green! I have a dozen shawls that are lime, but I think my brightest knit is my Magenta/Hot Pink ‘I Heart Cardians’ sweater. I am pretty sure I can been seen from the international space station….
My most colorful thing turned out to be clown barf gloves. The bright, multicolored yarn really did not knit up nicely on its own. It was too early in my knitting career for me to realize I had to use it with a solid color, or do something else that would break up the mush of colors.
Choosing which pompom to wear with this is the going to like picking a favorite child.
Far and away the brightest thing I’ve ever knitted was a headband and set of wristbands for a friend. She’s a long distance runner and was training for a marathon. This meant hours and hours each week running in the dark, so I knitted the set in neon green yarn that had reflective material threaded through it. And when I say neon green, I mean the-1980s-would-cower-in-fear-in-its-presence neon. She’s an awesome human being and I definitely did not want her getting squished by a car. If something was going to happen to her, it would be for trying to run 26.2 miles as the good Lord intended.
This is just awesome!! I have been looking for something that will inspire me – the tutorial on your removable pom-poms was great and this seems to be the perfect hat. I would love to knit this for my grandchildren for Christmas. Really amazing job and it totally does speak to an 8 year old’s glee!!
My most colorful knit was a bright yellow sweater with teal green edging. It was for my MIL. She wore it one time when she went out with a friend. The friend loved it so much that she begged for the sweater to wear to an event. My MIL never got the sweater back!
My most colorful project is the Rising Dawn shawl, which I knit in wonderfully brilliant Caribbean greens and blues. Love!

Another beautiful and fascinating design (and I always love your commentary, too 😊).
Probably my most colourful project has been the ‘Brain Frieze’ cowl by Stitchnerd Designs. I have knit it several times, but my favourites have been zany gradients or self-striping yarns against a subdued solid.
I am a huge fan, and I can’t wait to see what your knitterly inventiveness comes up with next! (IG: @purls_and_honey)
So cute! My inner 8 year old approves. However, it’s my inner self conscious teenager who was/is convinced that a combination of black/,blue/grey/brown is the perfect way to fade into the carpet that most often controls my color palette. I’m somewhat proud of myself that last year after a particular low point that l began something I am calling, Project You’re worth being seen, in that I’ve pushed my comfort boundaries and purposefully began to cast on colorful accessories and flattering sweaters. You’d be surprised what a neon green sweater does to your confidence level-https://www.ravelry.com/projects/Tkettle/silk-road. 😊
I had so much fun creating Find Your Fade from my colorful stash with about 20 colors all chosen as I knitted along. I am so happy with it I wear it for myself in the morning while drinking my tea. I surprised myself. My child full mind brings me much joy. Check it out at honeysims on Ravelry.
Beautiful hat and I love the pompoms.
The Hue Shift afghan that I made fir my daughter was the most colorful thing I have made so far.
