Sidereal (plus giveaway)
The hat? The lovely, loopy, purple hat that lots of you have been asking about since December? Well it’s out and you can grab it now!
I really did have a good time with this one. At heart, it’s just a standard ribbed hat with a deep folded brim. Because really, that’s an awfully good thing for a hat to be. Hats like that are easy and comfy and cozy.
But if ribbing is all you’ve got going on, things can get a tiny bit dull. So you throw in a little something fun every few rows to make those loopy stitches, and all of a sudden it looks all fancy and complicated…even though it’s really easy as can be. It’s fun too. I found myself wanting to do just a few rows more so I could watch the next set of loops take shape!
The result is something deeply satisfying…fun to knit, lovely to behold, and super comfy to wear. I’m not sure you can ask for too much more from a hat! Well maybe you can ask for a really really pretty set of crown decreases…but I’ve got you covered there too!
I knit mine in Skinny Singles from Hedgehog Fibres in Ghost. I wasn’t sure when I bought the yarn if I’d be doing one project or two, so I bought extra. But the hat only took one skein, so I’ve got another to give away. Leave a comment on this post telling me what you like in a hat to be entered to win. Folded brim or straight? Pompoms? Slouchy or fitted? There’s no right or wrong answer, I just like to know what you look for!
And, for everyone I can’t send yarn to, I’ve got a coupon for Sidereal. You can use the code LOOPY to get 10% off between now and Friday. Just put Sidereal in your ravelry cart, click on the ‘use a coupon code’ button, and type in the code LOOPY. You’ll see the change in price reflected right away (if you don’t, be sure you spelled the code right and don’t have any extra spaces before or after it).
Oh, and if you’ve fallen madly in love with this type of stitch, check out Constellate (that’s the other hat in the picture here). It uses a similar technique, and if you like Sidereal, you’ll probably like Constellate too. I have a feeling I’m going to explore this some more and do a little collection of projects using stitches like this at some point!
Comments left between now and the end of the day (eastern time) Friday, March 9, 2018 will be entered to win. I’ll pick a winner, contact them to get their addresses, and arrange to send yarn their way. Be sure to use a real email address so I can contact you if you’ve won (I won’t do anything with those email addresses besides notify the winner). If I do email you, I need to hear back from you within 72 hours or I will pick a new winner and contact them. Sorry, but I can only ship physical prizes to US addresses.
Definitely with a folded brim, fitted without a pompom. I would however put a pompom on my grandsonn’s hat. I love 💕 this pattern and yarn.
Definitely prefer a beanie type style (just like these). I go back and forth on the brim–folded or double.
I like slouchy hats without folded brims, but as someone with short hair, I struggle with what will look good on me. I don’t think I’m the pompom type…
Folded brim no pom pom but the important thing is it keeps my head and ears warm
Always with a folded brim for me and the slouchy look for my daughter, no brim. Sometimes the hat is mine, sometimes it is hers. Neither of us is fond of pompoms. Thank you for the great giveaway.Love the pattern and the beautiful yarn.
Love a folded brim. Slouchy or fitted is OK. I think slouch looks better on me, but for some reason I tend to knit fitted hats. I’m more attracted to the patterns. Not usually a pompom type, but they are so trendy lately I did succumb to knitting one pompom hat.
I’m super fussy about hats. I like both brims depending on the hat. I prefer fitted hats but like some slouchy hats. Not a huge fan of Pompoms. The biggest thing for me is getting something that fits right.
I’m agnostic on brims (I think it depends on the particular hat), though a folded brim is nice and warm on the ears. I’ve become a fan of slouchy hats in the last couple of years – it turns out they don’t muck up your hair as much, which is handy since it’s not like I’m going to bother fixing my hair. I’ve fallen a little in love with pom poms after a saw a post on Tanis Fiber Arts about blocking them, and now I revel in how round and fluffy they are.
I’m a fan of slouchy hats with deep brims, so you can make it more fitted if needed. I also look for interesting stitch details in the hat itself.
This hat is beautiful! I love folded brim hats that fit tight. Slouchy hats look very cute on some people, but it doesn’t suit my style. Pom poms are super fun and I do prefer them, but sometimes I need a pom pom-less hat to wear so I can put my hood up while I’m wearing it. Otherwise I look like a gnome.
Love ribbed knit beanies because of the stretch, especially for kids. And I am a big fan of using fingering weight yarn (even though that can take forever) it really gives a much softer feel.
I tend to like my beanie hats like I like my tea, simple, comforting, warm, and familiar. Ideally a hat just a little too long to be a watch cap but just shy of slouch territory: I want to be able to pull it over my ears, but also not completely cover my hair either. In my humble opinion while color work and texture make hate fun, lace should never ever ever enter into the picture. Lace means holes. Holes mean not as warm and are excellent places for that stubborn piece of hair to stick straight through it. Which is just tragic in too many ways to count.
Just learned hats this year and I’ve knit 17 so far!! 😱
This is just fabulous!
That pattern and yarn are gorgeous! I like slouchy hats with folded brims and fitted hats with pompoms.
What I look for in a hat pattern are decreases that look good, I also enjoy simple patterns that are easy to memorize and that you can pick back up after days or weeks if you get the sudden urge for garment knitting!
I love the pattern in this hat. Fingering weight yarn is my go-to for hats because there is so much in my stash.
Beautiful pattern! Can’t wait to cast on a couple of them!
Love folded brim, slouchy, and pom poms! I guess it’s the more hat, the better for me 🙂
Love watching your progress on everything you make on Instagram. I was obsessed with Constellate and now this one! Can’t wait to make like five of these ❤️
I love a VERY deep brim hat – the wind here in Seattle seems to find its way through to my ears! This will be the second hat pattern I’ve knit from you – I knit Constellate and have worn it constantly since then. The stitch pattern itself creates a denser fabric which helps to keep my head warmer since it’s knit in a fingering weight yarn. I am just now becoming a fan of pink (took me 30 years) and this color is so beautiful! I haven’t worked with Hedgehog Fibers yet but I’ve been admiring their colorways for some time.
This new pattern is SO beautiful! Have already knit constellate twice and can’t wait to start working on this one! My daughter and I love the folded brim, and pom for her and sometimes for me- depends. Just slightly slouchy is always best for us!
I’m a big fan of folded brims but I love plain brims on many hats, no pompoms though. Slouchy hats seem to always end up sliding down and covering my eyes so I really need a fitted hat.
I love slouchy hats without folded brim 💖
You really make me sad not to live on the bright side of the ocean !
Beautiful patterns and yarn !
Love a slouchy hat without a folded brim, but it has to cover the ears all the way!
