Collusion (plus giveaway)
It all started so simply. I wanted to play with two yarns but not to do the hard parts of colorwork (using two yarns in the same row scares me every time). And I wanted to play with slipped stitches. Before I knew it, there were three new hats in the world! The third, Collusion, is out today.
It continues the theme started with Entrapment and Misprision. You only ever use one yarn per row, and you make all the fancy bits happen by slipping stitches. It really is sort of amazing what you do within those constraints! And there’s something deeply satisfying about making something that looks so intricate out of just slipping stitches (which is about the most basic knitting technique you can imagine).
And yes…yes this hat is a victim of my recent pompom addiction. But don’t worry, the pompom is optional. I officially give you permission to blatantly ignore it if it’s not your style. It’s still awfully cute without the extra adornment…just look what the top does! Then again, I’ve noticed at serious increase in compliments from strangers on the street when my hats have pompoms, so maybe you should give it a try!
And I promise, this really is just a tube of stockinette…if you can knit stockinette in the round and count to three, you can do this! The only hard part is picking out which yarn you want to show off. I used Tosh Vintage for the background of all three of the hats in the series, and Tosh Merino Light as the accent yarn. My contrast yarn is solid, but this would be a beautiful way to use a variegated yarn that might be tricky to use by itself. Just pair it with a mellow background and watch it shine!
I’ve got a spare skein of each of the yarns I used to send off to someone. If you think it should be you, just leave a comment telling me how you feel about using two yarns at once. Never tried it? A little scared? Only under duress? Two is too easy, you like three or four? There’s no right or wrong answer, I just like hearing how you guys feel about things!
And for everyone I can’t send yarn to (I’m just not cool enough to get yarn to everyone, sorry!), I’ve got a coupon for this pattern. You can use the code SLIP to get 10% off the hat between now and Friday. Just put Collusion in your ravelry cart, click on the ‘use a coupon code’ button, and type in the code SLIP. You’ll see the change in price reflected right away.
Oh, and if you’re looking for the other patterns in the series, you can find Entrapment (the purple one) and Misprision (the pink one) on ravelry!
Comments left between now and the end of the day (eastern time) Friday, June 9, 2017 will be entered to win. I’ll pick a winner, contact them to get their addresses, and arrange to send yarn their way. Be sure to use a real email address so I can contact you if you’ve won (I won’t do anything with those email addresses besides notify the winner). If I do email you, I need to hear back from you within 72 hours or I will pick a new winner and contact them. Sorry, but I can only ship physical prizes to US addresses.
Wow love this pattern. Always worried that my tension is too loose or too tight with multiple strands….and the untangling of the yarn….
Oh Hunter! All of your hats intruque me. Thank you for sharing your talent with us.
I love working with 2 yarns. Can’t wait to try your patterns. Thank you so much for the yarn giveaway!
I love all three and it is perfect knitting for this time of year to add to the gift basket for Christmas–and so special to maybe have the yarn to work with- Thank you !
I love! using two yarns at a time and think it’s lots of fun!
And I hope I am picked this time!
Collision is amazing. I love using two colors at once. This hat is eye catching. You always choose the wonder color combos.
I love all your new and fresh ideas! It’s never the same old same old with your patterns!
I love work with multiple colors butt I love when it’s easy! This hat is gorgeous and I can’t wait to cast on!
I love the hats! Since I live in Texas and our winters here are occasionally cold, hats are something I can knit and give as gifts that get USED.
I love working with two colors but love when it’s easy! This hat is gorgeous and I can’t wait to cast on!
I can’t wait to make this pattern.
What a beautiful design!
Love the idea of two colours, but only using one at a time. Pattern purchased with coupon, thank you.
I’ve knit things where the completely different character of two yarns makes the same stitches look so different. I like what Space Cadet is doing with the same colorway and two yarns, the colors look different but work beautifully together.
As for Collusion, thanks for putting a positive spin on a word that’s been in the news almost every day. It will help me to think of this hat every time I encounter it.
Another super cute hat Hunter!!!
Mutiple yarns make me nervous. Stripes are usually it for me but if this is really that easy I might be persuaded to give it a go!
I like one-at-a-time colorwork, but only if it isn’t obvious that it’s one-at-a-time. For this reason, I am not a fan of most mosaic knitting but AM a fan of all your clever color tricks.
And I second the person on IG begging you to make the hat patterns into a Ravelry bundle!
I neeeed this to go with the Entrapment I’ve already made and is just sitting waiting for cold weather!
Using two yarns at once keeps things interesting, but I don’t find it as relaxing to knit that way. It’s tricky keeping the tension loose enough to keep the knitting elastic. I have a beautiful unwearable pair of socks but you’ve inspired me to try it again!
Knitting with two yarns not so bad it’s counting to three and other counting that trips me up every time because why should a grown woman remember how to count? 😳
I have worked with two yarns a few times but still feel like it’s challenging. This hat looks like a great two yarn project!
I love your DESIGNS! Also I just have to make the pom-pom on the Collusion hat NOW!! Can’t wait to see it on my needles! It’s a balmy 82° today, so why not cast on a small project! 🙋 Thanks again for another great design
Rita—
Two or more colors at once is okay with me – as long as I’m knitting. I’m still trying to get my fingers (and my head) around stranded knitting while purling.
I love working with two yarns at once since I took a class on two-handed two-color knitting. I know it’s a pretty basic skill for some, but I feel like a superhero every time I do it!
Lovely hat…
I love the wavy lines up the Collusion hat! I’m not scared of two strands at a time though I definitely prefer slipped stitches. Stranded knitting always has weird tension when I do it…
All these hats are terrific! But knitting with 2colors per row is my favorite thing to do. One in each hand, so balanced, so left/right brain, so zen.
This looks like it can be fun.
