Compunction (plus giveaway)
Ok…moment of truth here…think about your stash. Do you have a skein of sock yarn you just know isn’t going to become socks? I suspect you do, and I have a feeling Compunction might be just the thing to do with it!
Now I want to be clear…just because a skein of sock yarn isn’t destined to be socks doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with it. In fact, quite the opposite. It could be too lovely to hide away in shoes, or too delicate to be subjected to the rigors of life as a sock. Or it could be something special you just want to see and touch and interact with in a way you don’t normally do with socks.
That’s sort of what happened here. On one of our trips to Maine, The Boy spotted some yarn he really liked. It was made by a local shop and named after one of our favorite places and just seemed too perfect to leave behind. But it also wasn’t the sort of thing I wanted to make socks out of (I tend to favor chunky yarn for socks and this is skinny stuff).
But it would be perfect for a hat. A hat, and just maybe some mitts too. Because really, sometimes you don’t need something huge and bulky, and something a bit lighter is just the ticket.
A simple little herringbone stitch let the yarn shine (and makes the knitting fly, you’re slipping about half the stitches which always feel super fast to me). And I suspect you can get both pieces out of just about any full-sized skein of sock yarn (I got a large man’s hat and cuffs out of mine with yarn to spare).
And one more confession, I totally don’t have this exact yarn to give away (there was only one in the shop!), but I do have two other beautiful skeins of sockish-yarn-that-just-isn’t-destined-to-become-socks to send home to two lucky winners. They’re both yarns I got on various adventures, and they’ll both look amazing in this pattern. Just leave a comment telling me about a special skein of yarn in your stash to be entered to win.
And I am not quite cool enough to send yarn to everyone, but I can give everyone a discount. You can use the code DESTINY to get 10% off the hat between now and Friday. Just put Compunction in your ravelry cart, click on the ‘use a coupon code’ button, and type in the code DESTINY. You’ll see the change in price reflected right away.
Comments left between now and the end of the day (eastern time) Friday, April 7, 2017 will be entered to win. I’ll pick winners, contact them to get their addresses, and arrange to send yarn their way. Be sure to use a real email address so I can contact you if you’ve won (I won’t do anything with those email addresses besides notify the winners). If I do email you, I need to hear back from you within 72 hours or I will pick a new winner and contact them. Sorry, but I can only ship physical prizes to US addresses.
I love the pattern of this hat! And yes, I might have a skein (or 3) in my stash that would be fun to knit this up in, but please enter me to win anyway. You can never have too much sock yarn, right?
Lovely designs , Hunter
Happy Spring!

I bought a skein of Juniper Moon Findlay in a gorgeous blue green color. One of those that I just could not resist in the LYS. It’s lace weight and I haven’t knit anything in lace weight since I bought it, so it sits there mocking me. But I still love it!
One of my favorite lace weight yarns in one of my favorite colorways! I adore, adore, adore Juniper Moon Farms yarns!
This pattern looks so easy yet so elegant, but need to finish knitting my Curl first. Your patterns are amazing! Thanks again for helping me stay in style and use my stash.
I have some Anzula yarn in the Poppy colorway because I was missing my California home. Can’t decide what to make … Hmmm!
I bought some silk yarn at a fiber show, thinking I’d make something for my mom. It’s the perfect color to dress something up or to wear casually, and I know she’ll love it. Every time I think I have the “perfect” pattern, I grab the hank and just smoosh it and pet it. I know if I knit it up, it’ll be just as smooshy and soft, but I just can’t make that leap quite yet. 😂
I love my travel Yarns. Excuse they remind me of the journey and the setting where thy were purchased. I have a skein of dark blue Shibui sock yarn that I bought in Lawrence, Kansas at the Yarn Barn en route to surprise my sister for her 60th birthday that is waiting patiently to be socks… or a hat & mitts set!
Timely post! My daughter just reorganized all of her sock yarns and found two or three skeins that she didn’t know what to do with. I think I need to buy this pattern for her…she is the mitten/fingerless glove knitting queen!
Should I be fortunate enough to win that gorgeous yarn you’re giving away, I might be extra-nice and share with her. Maybe. 😉
I have lots of special skeins but I’d have to say I’ve been saving my Dragonfly Fibers Nautilace for something super special to knit. It’s so soft.

I have been knitting and crocheting for years and only recently tried the smaller weight yarns. I love them, my problem is that I am not familiar with them and live 100 miles away from any yarn stores so I can’t get e real feel for them. They can get a bit pricey so mail order can be a financial problem
Craftsy has yarn on sale all the time, and I think the outlet clearance sale is still going on at Jimmy Beans Wool.
Holy cow, those yarns you’re giving away are gorgeous! I hope I win. 🙂
I am in the midst of using that one special skein on a test knit for you of another pair of mitts! I had to rip them out and start over because I ran out of (the less-special) yarn in the middle of the second mitt, so I’m making them less long. But it’s a subtle mix of colors and the yarn has some possum in it. So soft!
I bought a lovely skein of Dream in Color Jilly in the Carolina colorway. I bought it with no plan and can’t bring myself to make socks… your new pattern seems destined for it! Yay!
I have a pretty skein of Tosh Sport that was gifted to me by a friend… still trying to decide on the perfect one-skein pattern for it.
This pattern is just lovely. I have loads and loads of sock yarn that I can’t quite get myself to put into a pair of boots, but this herringbone pattern is just quiet lovely and gives me a generous idea of what I can do with my yarn!
ToDo List for today:
1. Go through stash to look for the perfect skien of sock yarn to knit into this beautiful hat and mitts
I have a beautiful skein of the now no longer available Kismet Fiber. It’s a single ply in the most gorgeous tones of brown & dove grey. It’s so pretty and soft. I’m not sure what to do with it because it is a single ply & what ever I do with it needs to be special- much like your new mitts & hat ❤
Wait, there’s only supposed to be ONE special skein I have no idea what to do with in my stash? 🙂
Failure to follow that “rule” aside, I did buy some really gorgeous handspun last year. At only 50 yards, it’s probably destined to be paired with something else in a project, but I have yet to meet its perfect mate.
I just used a special skein of mohair blend to make myself a cowl. The colors were so pretty in the ball and even better knit up!
I have loved this pattern from when you first showed it on Instagram. Am looking forward to using some of my special sock yarn…decision time!
I have lots of single skeins that I bought just because I loved them for one reason or another. I do have a skein of cashmere blend that is so special that I am saving it for the perfect pattern.
It’s always good to have other projects for sock yarn and the hat and mitts fit the bill:) Great ideas.
My favorite yarn is usually whatever I’m using at the time, from Peaches & Creme (the original) to Kid Silk, I love the texture as I knit. One of my top picks was a label-less skein in a LYS. It was the right weight for socks and felt like heaven to touch and made a beautiful pair of socks, but, alas, i wore them so often, I wore a hole in the heal.
I have this beautiful skein of sock yarn that I picked up at Maryland Sheep and Wool some years ago. It is black and vibrant, electric royal blue. I’m afraid to use it- it looks so pretty in the skein, but I don’t think it’ll be as amazing knit up (especially if it pools!)
Dabbling in natural dyeing last year, a friend gave me some walnut leaves from her backyard. So … I have a skein of the most delicious rich brown fingering yarn, perfect for a hat and mitts.
Oooh, I have NO sock yarn at all like this – hahahahaha.
Lovely pattern!
From Lotus Yarns I have one skein of an orange-yellow color called Karma Police. It was purchased at Sock Summit 2009. I thought I would make socks but it has aged well in my stash and makes me smile every time I am in the sock yarn bin pulling out something else.
