Permutation (plus giveaway)
I have a hard time knowing when to stop. This was supposed to be a simple little hat. Instead it turned into something of an adventure. Allow me to introduce Permutation.
It all started with that gray and pink hat. It was a simple little thing. That spiky stitch is lots of fun to do and a fabulous way to practice playing with two colors. It would have been a lovely stand alone pattern. I mean just look how cute the top is!
But I have a hard time leaving well enough alone, and before I was done with the hat I found myself wondering about other variations on the theme. What if you did the spiky stitch all over? Or did it in thick stripes? Or had a folded brim? Or only used one color?
Before I knew it, I’d chatted with the good folks over at SpaceCadet, confessed my runaway imagination, and hatched a plan. I wrote up a pattern, and they worked their magic and sent me a whole stack of hats.
We ended up with five variations to show off, but there are a huge number of ways to put this hat together. You get to decide if you’d like a plain brim or a folded one.
You get to decide if you’d like the spike stitch to be all over, in thick stripes, or a bit more scattered
And you get to decide if you’d like to use two colors or stick to just one.
All together there are dozens of ways to put the pieces together. But don’t worry, the pattern walks you through it all and tells you exactly what choices all the examples used so you’ll have an easy time putting together something you love!
The hardest part might just be picking colors. But even that is more fun than it has any right to be. In fact, the folks over at SpaceCadet are going to help one of you take home your favorite color pairing. They’re sending someone a skein of Cressida (that’s the yarn we used for the background) and a skein of Capella (that’s the one we used for the spiky stitches) to someone so they can make your own hat.
I used Dark Skies (that’s the gray) and Tantrum (bright pink) on my hat. But the Fat Free Chocolate (brown) and Windswept (pinky-purple) are singing my song too. All you have to do to enter is leave a comment telling me which colors you’d use. There’s no right or wrong answer, I just like knowing what grabs your eye!
And while I can’t quite manage to send yarn to everyone, I can give everyone a discount. You can use the code VARIATIONS to get a dollar the price between now and Friday. Just put Permutation in your ravelry cart, click on the ‘use a coupon code’ button, and type in the code VARIATIONS. You’ll see the change in price reflected right away.
Comments left between now and the end of the day (eastern time) Friday, December 9, 2016 will be entered to win. I’ll pick a winner, contact them to get their addresses, and arrange to send yarn their way. Be sure to use a real email address so I can contact you if you’ve won (I won’t do anything with those email addresses besides notify the winner). If I do email you, I need to hear back from you within 72 hours or I will pick a new winner and contact them.
Oh I love that brown hat! It’s amazing. And here I thought I couldn’t love one more than the original grey… 🙂
I think the Fat Free Chocolate and Flow would be my favorite combination. 🙂
That is a beautiful pattern! I would use dark skies and maybe look up….but it’s very hard to choose!
I love the Dark Skies and Tantrum shown in your hat. These colors would coordinate perfectly with my shades-of- gray windbreaker (which I wear all the time) and several (OK, many) yarns I have in my stash waiting to be made into scarves, cowls, mittens, etc.
Beautiful, as always. Heading to ravelry now! 🙂
I would make the green hat exactly as it is — those colours and that pattern variation. It makes me happy. (Truth be told, even if I don’t win the contest, I’ll probably have this one on my needles once the gift knitting is done.)
Thanks for the chance to win!
I think the biggest problem with this hat is not being able to stop making it again and again! I’d be happy with any color of Space Cadet…it’s delicious yarn!
I am loving the color combos, but the solid pinky purple really calls to me.
I love your original Tantrum and Dark Skies!
This is so hard! Probably Dark Skies or Drizzle or even Nine Stones for the background, and then Molten Cool or Fathoms Down… But I feel like a pairing of Honey and Longing would also be nice and cheery, although probably not something I could wear myself!
I would use silver as the background and nine stones for the spikes. Beautiful yarn?
This is a great pattern and the hard choice for yarn would probably be Nine Stones and Blood Moon.
I love Space Cadet’s variegated colors, so how about Fathoms Down as the background with Look Up! as the accent.
Who doesn’t love Chocolate! With Blood Moon instead.
Pretty much the perfect hat, I’m so glad the pattern is now available. I think the wildness of Vortex would work well against a backdrop of Dark Skies.
Gorgeous! I would pick Dark Skies with Molten Cool for the accent.
Oxblood and Drizzle–gorgeous!
Lovely hats and photographs. I can see mix and match hats for the whole family.
I love Dark Skies and Windswept together.
I like the Dark Skies/Tantrum combination. I just love the pattern!!!
I’m in love with the Tantrum. Dark Skies is beautiful but I think other colors of Capella would be great too- Look Up or Gobsmacked? Such a burst of color for a bleak day.
Love Space Cadet’s colorways. I really enjoy her newsletter too.
I’m so in love!!!! I just bought the pattern and can’t wait to work it up!!!! They are all amazing. The brown one is my favorite. I’ve never thought of using brown with a variegated.
I can’t see what’s on the website (not sure if you broke them, or if it’s my notoriously slow internet connection), but I’d do a dark gray with light gray bursts or a gray/copper hat. Need to go scope this out on Rav!
I’m thinking Dark Skies and Molten Cool…
longing and sage
I’d like to try Blood Moon spikes on a Feather background 🙂 Lovely pattern, as always, and thanks to you and Space Cadet for the giveaway!
So hard to pick! I think I would go with Dark Skies as the background and Molten Cool as my spike stitch.
