Permutation (plus giveaway)
I have a hard time knowing when to stop. This was supposed to be a simple little hat. Instead it turned into something of an adventure. Allow me to introduce Permutation.
It all started with that gray and pink hat. It was a simple little thing. That spiky stitch is lots of fun to do and a fabulous way to practice playing with two colors. It would have been a lovely stand alone pattern. I mean just look how cute the top is!
But I have a hard time leaving well enough alone, and before I was done with the hat I found myself wondering about other variations on the theme. What if you did the spiky stitch all over? Or did it in thick stripes? Or had a folded brim? Or only used one color?
Before I knew it, I’d chatted with the good folks over at SpaceCadet, confessed my runaway imagination, and hatched a plan. I wrote up a pattern, and they worked their magic and sent me a whole stack of hats.
We ended up with five variations to show off, but there are a huge number of ways to put this hat together. You get to decide if you’d like a plain brim or a folded one.
You get to decide if you’d like the spike stitch to be all over, in thick stripes, or a bit more scattered
And you get to decide if you’d like to use two colors or stick to just one.
All together there are dozens of ways to put the pieces together. But don’t worry, the pattern walks you through it all and tells you exactly what choices all the examples used so you’ll have an easy time putting together something you love!
The hardest part might just be picking colors. But even that is more fun than it has any right to be. In fact, the folks over at SpaceCadet are going to help one of you take home your favorite color pairing. They’re sending someone a skein of Cressida (that’s the yarn we used for the background) and a skein of Capella (that’s the one we used for the spiky stitches) to someone so they can make your own hat.
I used Dark Skies (that’s the gray) and Tantrum (bright pink) on my hat. But the Fat Free Chocolate (brown) and Windswept (pinky-purple) are singing my song too. All you have to do to enter is leave a comment telling me which colors you’d use. There’s no right or wrong answer, I just like knowing what grabs your eye!
And while I can’t quite manage to send yarn to everyone, I can give everyone a discount. You can use the code VARIATIONS to get a dollar the price between now and Friday. Just put Permutation in your ravelry cart, click on the ‘use a coupon code’ button, and type in the code VARIATIONS. You’ll see the change in price reflected right away.
Comments left between now and the end of the day (eastern time) Friday, December 9, 2016 will be entered to win. I’ll pick a winner, contact them to get their addresses, and arrange to send yarn their way. Be sure to use a real email address so I can contact you if you’ve won (I won’t do anything with those email addresses besides notify the winner). If I do email you, I need to hear back from you within 72 hours or I will pick a new winner and contact them.
Fat Free Chocolate and Windswept would be my choice, too!
I love the dark skies as a background, but I’m really feeling teal these days and would go with the Fathoms Down for the accent.
This is hard to choose! I think I’d pick Dark Skies and Vortex. I love how a colorway would make the spikes different colors. Such a great pattern!
Tantrum is beautiful, but I think Molten Cool would also look great, maybe paired with Drizzle for the background
I love the Dark Skies and Tantrum combination!
Oh, I love the Nine Stones…hmmm. maybe with the Feather as an accent color? So hard to decide!
I haven’t heard of Space Cadet yarns before. They are all beautiful. I usually go for purples, but I think I would try Drizzle with Blood Moon.
One color hat in Plume. I have admired and loved, loved, loved that color for some time.
I also love the Fat Free Chocolate hat. Windswept is just a *bit* bright for me, though. I think I’d go with Plume. (And then I’d have some chocolate.)
I’d definitely go with the Dark Skies/Tantrum combination. Those are my colors!
I love Dark Skies and Fathom Down. All lovely colors!!
So hard to choose! But I think the combination of Dark Skies and Fathoms Down would be great (if we are allowed to choose colours you didn’t use in the samples?) I love this pattern just like all your patterns too!
Before reading what colours you used, I looked and Dark Skies with Tantrum looks most appealing to me…then I see that’s what you used!
Love the hats, the spike stitch is so cute!
I love your original grey with pink hat! When I saw your pictures way back months ago, I knew that I would have to have this hat some day when the pattern came out. Unless I decide that is the color scheme I must have, I will probably end up making one with green and either a cream or brown color, as I am matching a specific winter coat.
Fat Free Chocolate and Fathoms Down. Hunter I love your blog and how you describe your design process. Thanks for contests!
Dark Skies and Tantrum for me for sure!
what a fun design! Makes a nice platform to show of a skein of handspun too.
(comment not competing for the give away as I’m in Europe)
I would knit two – Dark Skies with Look Up! and Fathoms Down with Dark Skies.
I’m torn between the grey and brown, but would probably break for the gray. I really like how the pattern looks in stripes!
just love knitting hats and have a feeling this pattern will be a quick favorite!
What fantastic colors all your hats have! I would probably use Cressida Frigia and Capella Thrive. All the yarns they have are absolutely lovely, though! It wasn’t an easy choice!
I like them both but if I have to choose, the dark skies and tantrum gets my vote!
Can’t really decide which I like best, they are all so beautiful, however, since chocolate is a staple in my diet, I would most likely opt for the Fat Free Chocolate version with the Windswept for color. Beautiful yarns!
Great pattern(s)! Also: that’s the prettiest tantrum I’ve ever seen. 🙂
Fat free chocolate and blood moon first choice. So many beautiful options!
