Spicule (plus giveaway)
Want a hat? Wait, actually, want three hats? Maybe with a little something extra thrown in for fun? Because if so, I think Spicule might be just the thing.
That’s three lovely, snuggly, cozy hats (just perfect for the cold weather that I suspect will arrive any day now).
Plus three unspeakably adorable ornament versions that will look just darling dangling from your tree or tied on top of a present (massive massive bonus points if you knit someone a hat, wrap it up, and put the ornament sized version on top of the package as a present topper).
Now of course, each one is totally cute enough to stand on its own. The cables on each are lovely and intricate (I’m such a sucker for twisty little cables). And the crowns are rather marvelous if I do say so myself.
But cute though they are individually, there’s something about putting them together as a set (especially with the ornament sized ones in there) that’s just more fun than it has any right to be. I couldn’t resist bundling them all together, and I suspect you won’t mind!
I used different yarns for the full sized versions and the ornament versions. For the ornaments, I wanted something tiny to keep the scale of the things reasonable (I’m a fan of small ornaments, these come in at about 3.5 inches across). I used Gloss Fingering (in the undyed color called bare) from Knit Picks for them. But for the hats, I wanted something more substantial, both so the stitches would show up and so the project wouldn’t take too terribly long. I went with Swish Worsted (also in the undyed color called bare) also from Knit Picks.
They were both a lovely match for their projects, and I just happen to have a skein of each to pop in the mail. I think it would be best to share the love, so how about we do two winners. All you have to do to enter is leave a comment telling me how you feel about knitted ornaments. Already got a tree full? Totally going to sneak some in before the holidays? Putting them on top of all of this year’s presents? Not quite sure what the fuss is about? There’s no right or wrong answer, I just like to know how you feel!
And while I can’t quite manage to send yarn to everyone, I can give everyone a discount. You can use the code ORNAMENTAL to get a dollar the price between now and Friday. Just put Spicule in your ravelry cart, click on the ‘use a coupon code’ button, and type in the code ORNAMENTAL. You’ll see the change in price reflected right away.
Comments left between now and the end of the day (eastern time) Friday, November 4, 2016 will be entered to win. I’ll pick winners, contact them to get their addresses, and arrange to send yarn their way. Be sure to use a real email address so I can contact you if you’ve won (I won’t do anything with those email addresses besides notify the winner). If I do email you, I need to hear back from you within 72 hours or I will pick a new winner and contact them. Sorry, but I can only ship physical prizes to US addresses.
Oh, and for anyone paying alarmingly close attention at home, the ornaments sized versions were originally released as part of the Adorn ornament collection put out by Knit Picks last year. So if you have that, you already have the mini versions. The full sized versions are only available in the Spicule pattern (though you might be able to wing it if you’re feeling adventurous).
Wow, I adore these hats–the twisty cables and the *gorgeous* crowns.
And I love knitted ornaments! I’ve made tiny sweaters and this year am making tiny stockings. The ornament hats are so cute!
No tree – no ornaments in this house! However I did make a chain of tiny socks a number of years ago to display on the wall behind my desk. Too cute.
I’m working on Excursion now. It’s such a clever pattern that I’ll probably plug in another cable for a second pair.
My tree will have some knitted ornaments on it and I hope to get a few more knitted up. The ones I cherish the most are ones I have received from dear friends.
I love knitted ornaments as great on-the-go projects to tuck into my purse, and as breaks between the bigger holiday gift knits I seem to fall behind in every year.
Such beautiful patterns for simple yarn! It’s Nov 1 too, so it’s (finally) okay to start getting excited about wintertime and Christmas. 😉 I can definitely think of a few people who would love these ornaments or hats!
I love the hat patterns. I make a lot of hats throughout the year for various cancer charities. As for the knitted ornaments, I don’t have any! I think they are beautiful. Simple looking, but also very elegant. I would love to try knitting a few forthe tree this year. Thanks a bunch!
I think I’ll get started today making an ornament to add to every gift I wrap. Thanks for the suggestion and the lovely patterns.
We have a family tradition of buying a new ornament for each family member each year. The purpose was to give our kids a start on their own Christmas Trees when they moved out on their own. Now we have a new granddaughter and a grandson on the way and this would be a great start for them as well.
I have never knitted an ornament before. I have debated trying to knit a stocking. I plan to do that next year when husband and I have bought a house.
When my daughter was born, I decided I’d try to knit her an ornament every year, so that by the time she’s an adult, she’ll have a tree full. She’s 5 this year, and so far I’ve made an owl, a set of mickey ears, a snowflake, and a donut – I think this year will be a ladybug. It’s fun to come up with new ideas each season!
Reminds me of icicles and Minnesota winters…have many handmade ornaments on my tree but none like these lovely ones and I am a sucker for white..so fresh…want to do them all …..kathy
I love cables and these hats look like lots of fun! I love the crown decreases too. I hope I win these!
We do not celebrate Christmas, but that doesn’t mean I do not love all the little knitted ornaments! I have seen socks and sweaters/jumpers of all types. I have seen many hats too, but none as intricate as these! These are truly mini works of art.
I have a small branch that I use for small ornaments during every holiday like easter, Christmas etc. It is really fun to make new ones every year.
I love these little hats:)
I have not, yet, made any knitted ornaments BUT I make ornaments each year for all the nieces and nephews and have a few pinned ideas for knitted crafts and these little hats are sure to make the list:)
I also like the reader who mentioned she makes one each year for her daughter, what a cute idea!!
I thought these were precious when released as ornaments – I love that they’re full-sized hats now as well!
Knitted ornaments are so much fun to make and look gorgeous on the tree. These are beautiful patterns, my daughter will love them in her collection of hand knit hats!
I wish I had more knitted ornaments on my tree.
I’ve never knitted ornaments before – no time like the present to start!
I love the way the cables stand out in the white!
I think knitted ornaments are perfect for decorating a wrapped gift!
I do not celebrate Christmas, but I think ornaments have many adorable uses: bookmarks, wrapping accents, pins. Most of all I’ve rarely met a cable I didn’t love!
I treasure the handmade ornaments the best. Knit. Crochet. Ones the grandkids made, ones the kids made and yes even a few that I made way back in grad school
love the new hats 😀
These look adorable – I think it would be great to gift both a full sized and matching ornament to someone for Christmas – thanks for the opportunity to win some yarn
Another lovely pattern. I’m a new knitter and am always looking for patterns I think are different and interesting!
