Rolling
There are ways to keep the edges of your knitting from rolling, but sometimes you just need to relax and go with it. And this is totally one of those times.
I like how the rolled edge looks here. It plays nicely with the texture in the bands, and it shows off the colors in the yarn beautifully.
I’m going to have to wear it a bit to make sure it doesn’t feel awkward on my thumb, but I suspect it will be just fine.
What do you guys think? Do you like rolled edges? Or do they bug you?
That looks great! I like to use a rolled edge in combination with a rib for cuff of socks or sweater edges, especially the neck edge. I’ll be interested to see how much bulk you feel the rolled edge adds to the mitt.
Rolled edges? Most of the time, NO NO NO. If I use one (and it happens very occasionally) I always add a little bit of garter stitch or ribbing to give the roll a definite end. But generally, I don’t like them on the bottom of sweaters (because who wants to look bigger around the butt/hips/belly), I don’t like them on the ends of long sleeves (because they stick out and therefore are the first things to wear), and I don’t like them on hatbands (because I always feel like the hat then needs to be concominantly longer to cover my ears). They’re occasionally OK on a neckband, if it fits the rest of the sweater. But I would not be OK with them around my hand and definitely not around my thumb, because the extra fabric gets in the way. YMMV, though: you’re the designer, so if it makes you happy, go for it. Just don’t expect me to follow your directions completely. 🙂
Heh, I’ve never been a big fan of following instructions myself!
I like ’em fine as long as I intended them to be there.
I don’t mind the judicious use of rolled edges. Too much rolling or rolled edges on boxy garments makes me feel like I’ve gone back to the 90’s! Your mitts have just the right amount, and I love your color choices!
I agree they can be lovely when intended. I have a hat with a rolled brim that I love. Wouldn’t work everywhere, but there it’s great. And I agree with your point about the color being enhanced with this one. I can’t quite see a ribbing with this design, in either color. Looks like a fun mitt.
Strategic use is fine..I think it works lovely with these mitts.
Occasionally they work well but on the whole, I find them physically uncomfortable. I have some fingerless mitts finished with them and won’t do that again even though they look good because they are not comfortable and the extra bulk gets in my way.
