Pelagic (plus giveaway)
You know that skein of beautiful, multi-color sock yarn you just couldn’t resist? And then it turned out you didn’t know quite what to do with it? I totally figured it out. Pelagic is what you do with it!
First you grab a slightly heavier, solid-color yarn to pair with it. Then you bring them together in just the right way, the solid-color yarn keeping things orderly while the multi-color gets to be just as wild as it wants!
Here I’ve got Chickadee by Quince & Co playing the role of respectable solid-color yarn (Kumlien’s Gull), and Meridian by Seven Sisters Arts playing the role of wild child (Aphrodite), but this would work beautifully with lots of combinations. Just keep in mind you do want to use a slightly heavier yarn for the solid color to get the right drape in the hat and flare in the cuff.
Segmenting the colorful yarn off into neat sections like that lets it shine without letting it get too out of control. It works on the hat with nice broad bands of color, and it works on the cuff with more delicate columns. I really love how it lets me take a yarn I love (but would be just a little scared of) and show it off.
And just look what it does at the top of the hat! I’m not really sure anyone can be expected to resist that for long.
And speaking of irresistible, Karen over at Seven Sisters Arts has a treat for one of you. She’s sending someone a skein of the beautiful Meridian yarn I used here. All you have to do for a chance to win is leave a comment telling how you feel about wild colored yarn. Are you helpless to resist? Don’t quite get the appeal? Stash full of the stuff and no idea what to do with it? There’s no right or wrong answer, I just like to know how you guys feel! Someone will take home a skein of their very own.
And while I can’t quite manage to yarn to everyone, I can give everyone a discount. You can use the code FLASH to get a dollar the price between now and Friday. Just put Pelagic in your ravelry cart, click on the ‘use a coupon code’ button, and type in the code FLASH. You’ll see the change in price reflected right away.
Comments left between now and the end of the day (eastern time) Friday, September 9, 2016 will be entered to win. I’ll pick a winner, contact them to get their addresses, and arrange to send yarn their way. Be sure to use a real email address so I can contact you if you’ve won (I won’t do anything with those email addresses besides notify the winner). If I do email you, I need to hear back from you within 72 hours or I will pick a new winner and contact them.
Such a beautiful pattern! I love how you ‘tamed’ the wilder color, but actually allowed it to be showcased.
I LOVE color! So yes my stash is full of wild color. The yarn usually…sooner or later…let’s me know what it wants to be.
Love that hat pattern. The top is so cute..
While I can’t always resist the, I find them difficult to use. Sometimes they sit in my stash for years before the right pattern comes along. When it does, they are dynamite worked up.
I have way too much multicolored yarn in my stash and this is a perfect way to use it, thank you!
I feel you can never have enough wild yarn ( or any yarn for that matter!) the more the merrier !
I love intense vibrant jewel colors with pops of crazy in them. No pastels for me thank you very much!
What a wonderful pairing, both yarns are beautiful. The Meridian is lovely.
Love the wild colors. Can’t pass them.
I love colored yarns! Like you I collect them saving them for just the right project. Can’t wait to give your patterns a try.
I love the bright, multi-colored yarns. I have several in my stash, but I buy them on impulse, and often have no idea what to knit with them!
This pattern will help one of those stashed skiens find its project.
I love wild yarns and am like you – I don’t always have a plan for them. I am more of a shawl knitter than sock knitter so having a fun hat pattern will be helpful! I’m going to buy this pattern for sure! Love this yarn! Thank you! Stephanie
love the colours, hope i win
I definitely look and love wild yarn, but tend to buy more conservative.
This is wonderful, thank you for the opportunity 🙂 The wilder and crazier the colours, the more the yarn appeals to me! I’m someone who’s not scared of colour and am happy to splash it around!
Multi colored sock yarn is my weakness. The brighter the better. Except once I have it I never use it because I don’t know what to do with it except admire it!
I love the bright subtly variegated colors of the yarn. It makes me happy!
How do I feel about wildly coloured yarn? It makes me happy! The bright colours seem to sing from the skein, determined to brighten even the darkest of dark days! Bright, wild coloured yarns are optimistic and joyful and they make me smile. They also inspire confidence when, once being knit up, they are worn. No hiding in the background for us! Everyone NEEDS some, both in their stash AND in their wardrobe. They can be tricky to knit (I am not overly fond of the look of pooling) so this hat pattern you have designed is perfect! Makes a bright and positive sartorial statement while avoiding those unfortunate pools of colour. Well done you!
I love colors! They bring the world to life, they certainly fill us with life! I have a drawer full of yarn, that look absolutely gorgeous, waiting for me to be more proficient in knitting and crocheting to bring them all to life! Thank you for the coupon and a chance to win gorgeous yarn! The pattern is lovely, elegant and yet the wild child shines through!
Just what I need because all the grandkids need me what’s for winter!
My stash is mostly solids and semi-solids, but I do love the occasional pop of crazy variegated yarn. Thanks for the chance to add to stash 🙂
I love wild and crazy yarns. And I love the decreases on this hat!! You are always so intentional and clever in your designing!
Have you been lurking in my “yarn room”? I was just pawing through my sock yarns yesterday. That’s not to say that I don’t absolutely have to have the one that Seven Sister is giving away! I also must have your pattern!
I love this – I’ve only been knitting about 3 years, but have already built up a bit of a stash – and a big part of that is wonderful sock yarn. It is so beautiful, and I really want to like to make socks, but just can’t do it. So this is a perfect idea – thank you!
My answer is well complicated. For most of my life, I’ve been a wall flower, lacking in self confidence and having all the social grace of a bull in a China shop. As a result, most of my color choices during that time were drab, boring, and above all practical. Now suffering from a more or less serious illness that has me looking like a ghost and feeling generally miserable, I realize how ridiculous I was being. So now I celebrate color. I chose accessories to knit that pop against my boring wardrobe and bring a little color to my checks. Yet old habits are hard to break. This pattern and combination of colors is perfect for both the practical and the colorful side of me.
I have tons of wild colored yarn and don’t know what to do with it. Some of it I can make socks with but some is just too luxurious for socks. This pattern is perfect for getting rid of a skein or two!
