Tacit (plus giveaway)
I know quite a few of you have been eagerly awaiting these. So, for anyone in a tearing hurry, let me just go ahead and say Tacit are out. You can grab them and cast on right now. But do swing back by when you have a moment, as I’ve got yarn to give away down below!
So I know lots of folks watched this one come together (someone linked to one of the early posts about them on pinterest and it sort of blew up, which is totally nifty). And the thing I kept getting asked over and over was ‘wait, how do you do that?’ The answer is that it really is just cables. Lovely, classic, 2-over-2 cables (plus a bit of ribbing on the underside to make sure they’re comfy).
The cables are arranged a little bit differently than you might expect (you keep individual cable columns going in long, straight lines rather than doing that over, under, over, under dance cables so often do). But technique-wise? It’s just basic cables. Meaning it’s not at all hard (and as a bonus, once you see how it works, it’s very easy to remember, so you won’t be glued to the chart). Though the end result is rather impressive looking!
Mitts like this are actually pretty much my favorite thing to do with fingering-weight yarn. I have a hard time knitting socks out of it (it hurts my hands), and an equally hard time resisting its charms, so I end up with a fair amount of it in my stash. And of course, even if you love knitting socks from fingering-weight yarn, you probably occasionally encounter a skein or two that’s just too pretty to hide in shoes. My natural inclination is to make mitts!
These are made with lovely yarn from Ancient Arts Fibre Crafts that I got way back at the second Sock Summit in 2011. Any yarn that makes it through that many stash tosses is something special (I am pretty ruthless with the stash, only the good stuff sticks around long)! The exact base and color I used are, sadly, no longer available. But I talked with the good folks over at Ancient Arts, and we figured out that their BFL Sock yarn in Fog Warning will make a fabulous substitute.
They’ve got a skein of it to send off to one lucky knitter. If you think it should be you, just leave a comment telling me how much of your stash is sock yarn. More or less all of it? Just one or two special skeins? None any at all? There’s no right or wrong answer, I just want to know if I’m the only one who can’t resist sock yarn’s charms!
And while I can’t quite manage to yarn to everyone, I can give everyone a discount. You can use the code ZIG ZAG to get a dollar the price between now and Friday. Just put Tacit in your ravelry cart, click on the ‘use a coupon code’ button, and type in the code ZIG ZAG. You’ll see the change in price reflected right away.
Comments left between now and the end of the day (eastern time) Friday, June 10, 2016 will be entered to win. After the contest closes, I’ll pick a winner, contact them to get their addresses, and arrange to send yarn their way. Be sure to use a real email address so I can contact you if you’ve won (I won’t do anything with those email addresses besides notify the winner). If I do email you, I need to hear back from you within 72 hours or I will pick a new winner and contact them.
oh man, I love these. And I am not surprised that you made them mirror each other — and I’m so going to do that, too! I might make them into full-blown mittens, not sure. But I am definitely going to make these! CABLE LOVE!
My stash is about half sock yarn.
Love that skein Thanks for the opportunity
I love these mitts. Over half my stash is sock yarn. I can’t resist a pretty skein.
Can’t resist sock yarn! Knitting up a pair of mitts is one of my favorite projects, I am always looking for a new pattern to try. I currently have just a few different colors of sock yarn just waiting for that perfect mitt pattern and it looks like Tacit is the one. Can’t wait to try this pattern. Thanks Hunter!
I tried working again with sock yarn only a few short years ago. I finally got “it”, why so many love it! In the past, I just couldn’t hold on to the thinner strands, as I work mainly with worsted and aran. I have a massive stash, but the sock yarn I had amounted to 1/5 of it. Now, I have picked some up here and there, it amounts to about 1/4. 🙂
My sock yarn stash is about 25% of my total stash. I’ve had a hard time choosing patterns as there are so many beautiful ones available. I really like your patterns!
Use hand painted sock yarn for fingerless gloves {for myself?? } Who knew? Yes, please; I would love to win the skein.
And, at least 1/3 of my stash is sock yarn!
These turned out beautifully!
I’d say a little over half of my stash is made up of sock yarn. And the reason that my hands hurt currently is that 7 out of 8 of my WIPs use fingering weight. (I’ve actually taken the last week off from knitting to give my hands/shoulders a break.)
Lovely design! About 1/4 of my stash is sock yarn.
My favorite colours! And I love the design!
I can never resist a beautiful hank of yarn, but love a delicate sock yarn!
I am pretty sure over 2/3s of my stash is sock yarn. I’m not going to offer an exact count. 😉
Yea mitts! I am so excited. (And I just can’t hide it!)
Thank you for the coupon code. Love the mitts.
I have quite a number of sock yarn skeins that I bought because they were just SO pretty. I’m not much of a sock knitter (I do make some every now and again) but mitts are (as you say) the perfect way to enjoy that beautiful fingering weight yarn.
These mitts are perfect! I actually find I wear my fingerless mitts almost constantly in the Summer – my office believes in powerful air conditioning.
I would say about 50% of my stash is sock yarn. I tend to gravitate to the thinner yarns – and then I wonder why it takes me forever to get a large project done! 🙂
These mitts are lovely, and the yarn is absolutely perfect! Fingers crossed for me!! 🙂
These are beautiful! The pattern looks like one that would keep my interest, too. I would love to make these and will purchase the pattern. I have lots of too pretty for socks fingering yarn in my stash, but like everyone with a stash, there’s no such thing as too much beautiful yarn!
Love your new mitt pattern! Probably 3/4 of my stash is sock yarn, and I never knit socks! Instead, I knit cowls, shawls, and of course mitts. When I am yarn shopping and want to buy something but don’t have a pattern in mind, I always buy sock yarn because I know that I can always find the right pattern later. Thanks for the chance to win some beautiful yarn!
I have definitely been waiting for these, so thank you for all the shuffling necessary to bring them out sooner. They are the loveliest, and Ancient Arts is such a cool company. Excellent combination!
Beautiful mitts. I have lots and lots of sock yarn, maybe 75% of my stash. Besides loving to knit socks, I like to make fine gauge sweaters for my grand children. Thanks for the lovely pattern and the chance to win some yarn.
I HAD tons of sock yarn; bins and dresser drawers and a whole big cedar chest……etc. I gave most of it away to an up and coming knit shop because it hurts my hands to knit socks. The sock yarn I kept is for lace projects which I love to do just because of the miracle of blocking!!! My favorite sock yarn is Dream In Color. It’s so gorgeous I can’t stand it!!!
I made my first pair of mitts this past winter. I loved knitting them and my daughter-in-law loved them even more. This pattern and the yarn are irresistible!
LOVE this mitt pattern!!! Maybe 1/3 of my stash is sock yarn—can’t resist all those colors and soft yarns…….hope to knit this soon!
I have over half of my stash taken up by sock yarn. And while I love making socks, I also love original ideas for using that part of my stash. These gorgeous mitts definitely qualify! Thank you for the chance to win the lovely yarn you used to make yours!
Oh, Man!
These will be beautiful in Ancient Arts meow collection, Calico Cat!!!
