Stellar
Oh hey look, I remember how to make them!
Does anybody else make these? Or maybe any other paper-based ornaments? I confess I find it unreasonably satisfying to turn paper into something so substantial and three dimensional.
And yes, I need to get out the super tiny, super sharp scissors and trim my ends more neatly (as always, amazon links are affiliate links), but these were just a practice run to see if I could still remember how to make these. I suspect the first go will end up as cat toys (the kittens have already shown an interest), and they’re not picky about tidy ends.
If you want to make your own, there are some good instructions over here. All you need is paper strips (I use these, but you can start with typing paper if you want to see if you like the process) and a few minutes of folding. You could have a tree full by the end a netflix binge if you were so inclined!
My mother learned how to make these from her mother. They used to use strips of newspaper, then dip them in wax and cover them with glitter. Now she just uses ribbon. I’ve tried learning to make them, but it doesn’t stick.
I should try harder to remember the steps.
I’ve seen that but never quite managed it myself (adding hot wax to a project seems to increase the chances I’ll die). It would totally make them last longer though!
I LOVE making these! I taught myself in 3rd grade from a craft book my mom had. I used to cut strips of computer paper … the old school kind from the 70s when my dad was a programmer … wide with holes on the ends. I also used to use wrapping paper cut into strips. Now I mostly use wrapping ribbon or any type of ribbon I can get my hands on that will work. Super fun to make huge ones too!
I had a roll of adding machine paper and used that to make one once, turned out about the size of a bread plate! It was probably too big to be practical, but definitely dramatic!
