Anemochory (plus giveaway)
I am so glad you all are indulging me and letting me bring my early patterns back out. Anemochory are just too lovely to keep tucked away any longer!
You know how, when you’re new at something, you don’t have the good sense to know what’s going to be hard, so you just sort of dive in to all sorts of things? That was totally what happened with these.
Knitting them wasn’t hard, but writing them down proved challenging for 2010 me. Luckily, I’ve had some practice at this sock writing thing between now and then, and 2015 me had no trouble with it. I even worked in a few extra sizes (because socks this swoopy should be available to everyone).
I suspect I may need to play with arches like this next time I cast on for a new pair of socks. They really are unreasonably fetching (and they feel awfully nice on your feet, too)!
These socks are made with a lovely sock yarn by Hazel Knits (always a fabulous choice). And while I don’t have this particular color to give away, I do happen to have a skein of Hazel Knits in a lovely orange (I can’t find a color name on the label, but it’s somewhere between Braeburn and Heirloom) to send home with one of you. Just leave me a comment telling me how you feel about arch shaping on socks to be entered to win. (Love it, not for you, not tried it yet but want to, maybe a bit scared? There’s no wrong answer. I just want to know if my fascination is shared!)
And while I can’t send yarn to everyone, I can give everyone a discount. Just use the code SWOOP to get a dollar the price between now and Friday. Just put Anemochory in your ravelry cart, click on the ‘use a coupon code’ button, and type in the code SWOOP. You’ll see the change in price reflected right away.
Comments left between now and the end of the day (eastern time) Friday, October 2, 2015 will be entered to win. I’ll pick a winner, contact them to get their addresses, and arrange to send yarn their way. Be sure to use a real email address so I can contact you if you’ve won (I won’t do anything with those email addresses besides notify the winner). If I do email you, I need to hear back from you within 72 hours or I will pick a new winner and contact them. Sorry, but I can only ship physical prizes to US addresses.
At first I felt intimidated by the idea of arch shaping, but I love a challenge and these are so unexpectedly (for socks) graceful — I’d love to try them.
This pattern is awesome! I haven’t tried arch shaping yet, but I would love to! It’s always fun to try new techniques.
So lovely! I love the shaping!
These socks are lovely. The toe is unique. It is a shame to have to cover it with shoes.
The construction on these socks is beautiful! I haven’t tried arch shaping before, though I’ve tried pretty much every kind of heel.
I’m always up for a new technique so I’ll have to try it.
Lovely socks! Of course I’m a sucker for anything purple…but I do really like the design of the arch and top of the foot!
Arch shaping…scares me, but this is a beautiful, beautiful sock…
Arch shaping? Ooh that’s a good idea. A snugger fit there is really nice if you have high arches.
So happy to have the update! Thanks, Hunter. I bought the pattern a long time ago, and now I finally feel like I might actually be able to knit it.
While I haven’t tried arch shaping, I should since they would probably fit my very high arch better…..hmmm, perhaps in a lovely orangey color perhaps?
Yay for arch shaping!
these are too pretty not to try. I have never shaped an arch this way but love to try new things.
Wow these are cool socks. Arch shaping … never tried it. I’d be interested.
I love those socks! My attitude about arch shaping has to do with my freakishly high arches. If I can find socks that fit those arches, they go into my “go to” sock archive and become staples when knitting for myself. Think I need to try these to see if they are compatible with my feet!
Have never done arch shaping but I so look forward to trying it. These are just lovely.
Haven’t tried arch shaping yet but since i do have high arches, this may be in my near future.
I’d love to try arch shaping. I often knot socks, and something a little different would be fun!
I’m intrigued by arch shaping, but haven’t ever tried it
These are just beautitul! Interesting, too.
New to sock knitting, here… but I would chance to say that arch shaping would be important to the sock fitting well. The one pair I have knit didn’t have any shaping… and resulted in a sloppy fit 🙂 Must head over to Rav….. Thank you!
I think the arch shaping looks lovely…I’ve never tried it, but it looks worth it! Thanks for the chance to win. 🙂
I haven’t tried arch shaping yet. To be honest I didn’t know it was a thing until I read your blog today. Can’t wait to try it.
I’ve never done arch shaping, but have been thinking about trying it for a while now. Not only does it look beautiful, but I imagine the fit is fabulous!
This is an intriguing technique, but I have not yet used. I have narrow heels, so this may be the answer to better fitting socks.
The design is lovely and I can see knitting these for me (The give-away socks can be less gorgeous!). Thanks for the effort to write them down.
I’m always interested in knitting socks, so love to check out new techniques to see how they compare to my go-to formula — top-down-heel-flap-gusset with some kind of stretchy ribby stitch pattern.
I look forward to trying this new-to-me arch shaping!
