Perseverance
So I want a nice deep folded brim on this hat (skinny ones make me look like a fire hydrant, if I’m going to fold a brim, it’s going to be deep). Alas, that means I have to knit about fourteen miles of ribbing.
Actually, it’s something closer to five inches, but it might as well be fourteen miles. I want the brim to be about two inches deep when it’s on my giant melon head, which means it needs to be about five inches high on the needles (2 inches folded up, the 2 inches that covers up, plus an inch to account for the length you lose when you stretch it out in blocking).
This, in turn, means I have lost all will to live and will be knitting forever. Send tea.
I feel this way about ribbing at the start of hats as well, but it really is practical (especially for Cleveland winters). I loved how the last hat looked, so I’m looking forward to the completion of this one. (sjn821 on Rav)
LOL! True, ribbing can feel like it takes forever, but then when you’re no longer paying attention, suddenly you’ve reached your goal. This yarn is truly beautiful.
Take a peek at this for a little giggle…

can you tell me, please, what yarn that is? it is beautiful!
I love a deep double brim, too! The miles of ribbing is totally worth it, when it ends up being the only thing keeping the wind out. I love knitted hats, but I have a super sensitive ears- anything else than a double brim (and lined is even better) is just a spring or fall hat for me.
Oh, I’ve been there (the endless ribbing slog). But it does look like you’re getting there. Have some nice tea (or some of that wonderful hot chocolate made with your (in)famous chocolate paste), and carry on. I’m sure you’ll be done sometime before 2016! Probably sometime before October, come to that.
We have got to find some way to make the ribbing on your projects more interesting – because even though I’m only knitting a wee tiny ornament hat (Nilas), I’m also slogging on the knitting. 🙂 I also frequently shorten the crazy-long ribbing on other patterns in favor of just having more cables. But I’m the type who is perfectly fine covering some of those cables with the folded brim if it means having a more enjoyable knit. 🙂
