Share (yarn giveaway)
We’ve chatted before about the process of picking yarns for a book. I’ve explained that it’s both tremendously fun and more than a bit nerve-wracking. Imagine it — you start with a blank slate, and you can pick whatever yarn you want. Now that’s exciting, but it also leaves me a bit paralyzed with indecision.
But, one of the fun parts that often happens during that process is getting to know delightful yarn companies. The people who work in this industry really are the nicest folks you could imagine. They’re always excited about new projects and eager to share their work with designers. It’s not unusual to find a package on your doorstep, just so you can see bases or colors or new goodies in person. And really, that’s always fun!
However, with all that yarn whizzing back and forth, you are bound to end up with a few skeins that aren’t destined for the book. Now, I always offer to send them back, but sometimes yarn companies are nice enough to tell me to keep them. I feel like I should share the wealth a bit, so I want to start giving some of these lovely skeins away to you!
Today, we’ll start with a beautiful skein of Mountain Colors Crazyfoot in the color Harmony Honey.
This is a delightful yarn. A classic sock weight, with 4 firmly twisted plies, it’s marvelously round and springy. It’s 90% superwash merino and 10% nylon, so it is easy to care for and will wear beautifully. And I’m absolutely smitten with this particular shade of yellow (and we all know how I feel about yellow socks). It’s got just enough variegation to provide lovely depth without ever running the risk of obscuring your fancy stitch work.
I’d like to send it off to one of you along with any one of my available individual sock patterns. If you think it might like to come live with you, leave a comment telling me what you look for in your ideal sock yarn. Do you need a bit of nylon or a tight twist for durability? Is it all about the color? Are you particular about the thickness of your sock yarns? There aren’t any right or wrong answers, it’s totally a matter of opinion, I just want to know what you like!
Comments left between now and the end of the day (eastern time) Friday, August 8, 2014 will be entered to win. I’ll pick a winner, contact them to get their address, and arrange to send the yarn their way. If you’re leaving a comment, be sure to use a real email address so I can contact you if you’ve won (I won’t do anything with those email addresses besides notify the winner). If I do get in touch with you, I need to hear back from you within 72 hours or I will pick a new winner and contact them. Sorry, but I can only send prizes to US addresses.
P.S. This giveaway is now closed and a winner has been contacted.
It’s all about the color for me in choosing sock yarns. I have a big enough stash with varieties of twists, plies and durability that I can mix and match with patterns at will.
I love really round and springy sock yarns with a high twist and just a bit of nylon. I’m a sucker for bright colors too!
At this point in my knitting life, I like a nice round sock yarn. I also prefer the yarn not be “splitty”. A touch a nylon doesn’t hurt either!
GORGEOUS. Love Mountain Colors.
I like sock yarn that is soft and fun to knit with. Nylon is good but not a deal breaker. I don’t like yarn that splits easily!
Colors and ease of care are the sock yarn attributes I look for. I adore bright colors, variegation, and self striping yarns always catch my eye!
color plays a big role in what sock yarn I buy, however since I have been knitting socks for about 50 years ( oh my gosh I guess I am that old ! ) I also look for a little bit of nylon for strength, I learned that the hard way when my socks wore out very quickly, and now I also like a little bit of cashmere for softness !
I’m usually drawn to yarn first by color, then by the feel and texture. I live where it gets really hot, so I usually look for light weights that knit up into lacy open work scarves or shawls that are perfect for the evening.
Color dose play a part and so dose twist. This Yellow is Pretty! It got to be Squishy in the hank form.
I fall in love with colors, texture would be the next attribute I look for. I love seeing how the patterns develop differently with different yarns. That’s what makes so much fun to knit…almost instant gratification!
I’m another all about the color. But in the long term I like something that won’t fuzz on me – a little nylon content in my socks seems very important.
Yarn that does not split and has a certain springiness to it. A deep, consistent color helps as well. Mountain Colors fits that description and I am smitten with their sock yarns.
I like my sock yarn to be soft and springy so it’s comfortable to walk on as a finished sock. And not splitty is a huge plus too.
Color calls me over, but if it’s not singing in my hand it doesn’t come home. I do like a bit of nylon for my sock yarn
A superwash with nylon is the best for me when it comes to socks. Especially if I want to give them as gifts and want something easy for the recipient to take care of. Other than that give me bright colors!!
The color gets to me every time.
I’d say it would have to have a bit of nylon or mohair but still be soft
I used to think I was all about the color, but then I realized that I buy Casbah in pretty much any color I can even remotely tolerate bc I love it so much. So, it would seem that soft sock yarn that holds up is my cup of tea. (ahem. It doesn’t hurt that most Casbah colors are lovely.)
Color – if it is a color that speaks to me, the rest doesn’t matter.
I start with color, since who doesn’t love happy colors on their feet? Then, I tend to pick based on durability, since I don’t want to do all that work and have them wear out.
Color…..but I’m a recent convert to nylon after an intense round of darning.
Color first, then the feel of the yarn. It has to be soft and sproingy. I have to love knitting with it. Besides, we’re on our feet all day, they deserve something nice.
Definitely color. Thanx for give-away!
While it’s color that attracts me to yarn initially, the more I knit socks (and I knit a lot of socks, almost only socks), I’m finding it’s about the quality more and more. My socks MUST contain some nylon but the high twist ones are preferable. There’s nothing like the stitch definition that gives. I just LOVE sock yarn, knitting socks, all things sock. It’s all good.

I’m crazy about color and I also love yellow! This is a beautiful shade! Thank you for sharing the wealth!
