Still Entranced
So the cowl now has a friend!
Or rather, the partial cowl has a friend.
You see, I want the cowl to be as long as possible, but I also want a hat and mitts, so I’m holding off on finishing the cowl until I’ve finished the others, just so I can use all the yarn.
I’m really rather taken with it. I used the same stitch as in the cowl and made a band to go around my head then tapered it down to a point. Then I picked up stitches on one side (evenly adding in as many as needed to get enough to make a hat for my head) and started going up. After a bit I joined it all up neatly and then went up a bit more before doing some decreases.
I think the result is adorable (though it may need some sort of decorative button to go on the point). The Boy keeps gently pointing out that I’ve left a hole in my hat…a hole…where the cold will creep in. I keep insisting that this was quite intentional, which results in some funny looks. I’ve settled for assuring him that the hole is optional, and that one could make the hat without it if necessary.
What do you guys think? Adorable, or a terrible breach of hat protocol?
Love it!
I quite like the hole, I think, but I don’t live somewhere that cold creeps in very often. It is fun that it’s an optional hole, for sure! I love options. : )
I have lived somewhere that I got so cold and windy that I stopped once, mid-errand, went into a tourist shop and spent far to much money on a knitted hat (which I still own). I would close up the hole. I am glad it is option in the pattern.
The band is fantastic. I adore that stitch!
*that it got so cold and windy…. not I
I love it, but I have to admit my first thought when I saw the picture before I read the post was “there is a hole in the hat”
I would make it without a hole. But the hat is really hip!
I like, but I’d weave contrasting yarn in there or close it up because I’m always cold.
Oh, wait, is that a ponytail hole? Because that then is awesome.
Love love LOVE the ponytail idea! I’m pretending that’s my justification if questioned!
Is that a psso stitch pattern? I’m really very curious about how the diagonals are created. I’m quite taken with it.
If the hat is meant to be warm, then I agree with The Boy. I would likely not keep the hole myself. If, however, you want the hat to be fashionable, and will not be wearing it out in cold weather, well then the hole is a fashion feature. An eccentricity to be admired. And I do rather like Meri’s idea of using it for a ponytail.
Definitely envisioned as a cute/stylish hat rather than a super warm hat, at least for me. It’s a nice light/soft/drapey fabric. Though because of the material (wool and silk) it’s still surprisingly toasty.
I think the hole looks like an accident too, so I am with The boy! I was thinking of those lovely eidelweiss buttons/catches that hook together to close the hole perhaps?
It is too short to be a ‘keep your ears warm in this frigid cold hat’, so the hole isn’t that sort of breach of hat protocol. But unlike decorative lacy hats this hole looks accidental. Sorry but I have to agree with the Boy.
I’m afraid I would want to close up the hole, too (no ponytail here, but that’s an excellent idea!) Then again, like most of the country, it’s freezing so hard here that things are popping! So warm is the word.
I want to knit the set in *that* very yarn, too. So lovely!
I am with Meri (I know, shocking, right?) and think the hole is likely a pony tail spot. Nothing worse than that lump…
