Let Them Eat Cake
This is the recipe from the towels shown in the post from last week. I’m not typing it up all proper and presentable, because that would rather go against the spirit of the thing now wouldn’t it. The handwriting (oh and that monkey) are half the fun.
Now to be honest, I don’t ever use crisco (because I never actually have it on hand) and instead use all butter. I also tend to use cake flour and not bother with sifting. Oh, and I’ve been known to make it with buttermilk instead of regular milk and to up the coco powder by about half, and that is not at all a bad thing at all. Do let me know if it finds its way onto your table, I think you’ll like it!
I don’t believe Hunter has used coffee often, but my mom frequently did as a substitute for the vanilla or chocolate. Use two spoons of very, very strong coffee made from instant coffee disolved in cold water. I can no longer use Crisco, because it is soy. I use a solid vegetable shortening with excellent results. I still bake it in the bundt pan mom had, but a tube pan will work as well.
What’s sweet milk? Is that condensed milk? Or is it something else?
If I can figure that out, I am totally going to make this….
Brilliant – thank you!
I also was wondering about the sweet milk?
My mother always made biscuits twice each day with buttermilk…which was her idea of “sour” milk. Sweet milk just means ordinary milk that you would drink. I like to use whole milk.
