In The Grip
I got the nicest note from someone the other day saying they were sorry I wasn’t knitting much these days. I had to do a bit of a double take. I sort of feel like I’ve been knitting like a mad woman. That cramp in my neck and the twinge just above my right elbow also seem to indicate that I’ve been knitting rather a lot.
What I’ve not been doing is showing you my knitting. That is in large part because most of what I’m knitting at the moment is swatches. Piles and piles and piles of swatches. See? And yes, yes that green thing is freaking delicious.
I am, in fact, rather besotted and quite firmly in the grip of my current obsession. These are all swatches for that new project I mentioned the other day. The one that sprung forth like Athena, fully formed, and has been laying claim to my every waking moment since its inception. The project that really needs a secret code name so I can talk about it with you for the next little while without giving away any secret info. Any ideas?
So while I may not be finishing many completed projects these days, rest assured that I am knitting. I will try and do a better job of sharing what’s on my needles, even if it is just in swatch form at the moment. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go find at least four more yarns…possibly seven more. I’ve already made plans for all the ones I have, and I desperately need more yarn so I can make more swatches. Any current yarn favorites? Most any weight is good, heavy lace right on up through worsted…my current obsession is nothing if not versatile!
Athena is a perfectly good code name for your project. I once named a design Athena because, as you say, it jumped fully formed out of my head!
PS: Yes, that green thing *is* freaking delicious!
Oh I LOVE the green thing!
I can’t wait to hear more about your project! It looks fantastic! I also think Athena is a great code name. 😀
I have too many yarn suggestions… I started looking through my stash and instantly came up with about 20 goodies. A few I highly suggest you try are:
Robin J. Edmundson’s Silk Bamboo: Fingering weight, fantastic drape, hand dyed in the most gorgeous colors imaginable.
Nerd Girl Yarns’ Bounce & Stomp: Fingering weight, hand dyed fantastic colors, perfect for socks
Sun Valley Fibers’ 80/20 Merino/Nylon Fingering: Another fingering weight, hand dyed fantastic colors, perfect for socks
Sun Valley Fibers’ Single Ply Merino Worsted: Worsted weight, single ply, possibly the softest yarn I’ve ever felt, but very delicate
Grinning Gargoyle’s Seda DK: DK weight, soft, fantastic hand dyed colors (their shinny penny colorway is one of my favorite ever)
Oh, super helpful, thank you! And several of those are new to me, so now I have a perfect excuse to go yarn stalking.
I was thinking project Athena, and see that others went in the same direction.
And yes, indeed, the green thing!! I’m also intrigued by the white thing at the top of the pile.
Love Wool Dispensary’s sportweight Useful Restorative.
I love it just for the name…that’s utterly fabulous. Thanks!
Ooooh! The suspense is killing me!
Check out the fingering weight beauties — super interesting colors — at Iridaceae Colorworks: http://www.etsy.com/shop/IridaceaeColorworks
Suspense is good for you, it builds character. That’s what I tell myself, while I wait (oh so not patiently) for the return of The Walking Dead. And those colors are gorgeous, thank you!
I also think Athena is a great code name. I pretty much just want to poke my fingers through the green swatch and chase my Niece around with it, but that’s just me. I’d re-block it after of course. It looks so fun, and soooo soft!
It’s a yarn by String Theory, a silk and wool blend, and it seriously is the yummiest thing ever. Though yes, I can see how it would be good for playing chase too!
I mostly learn of new yarns from you, but here goes:
– Zen Yarn Garden Serenity 20 (nice stitch definition, great feel, rich color)
– The Yarn Sisters Black Pearl fingering – haven’t used it yet, but it is to die for (shimmery, soft)
– Handmaiden Casbah (I just LOVE it.)
…and if you decide not to go with Athena, you might consider a codename like Masquerade.
Ooooh, two old favorites, and something new to check out, thanks!
Almost 100% of my knitting consists of all things Malabrigo, Blue Moon Fiber Arts, Cephalopod Yarns, or Verdant Gryphon.
VG’s Mondegreen is especially lovely. And BMFA has some new Targhee yarns that seem like they’ll be fun to play with.
And what a lovely list that is! I’ve actually got a Cephalopod that just came yesterday, and one of the ones there is BMFA. I see we have very similar taste!
