Now that I’ve done this book thing a time or two, you’d think I’d know what to expect (or at least not get surprised when the same thing happens again).  But no.  No, I caught myself off guard once again.

Last night, while surrounded by a giant pile of swatches, I found myself thinking ‘I really need to knit something, I have nothing to show the blog.’  This happens every single time.  Each book has a ‘swatch like a maniac’ phase.  It follows the ‘stare at yarn for days on end’ phase and precedes the ‘draw charts and write patterns till your eyes cross’ phase.  It’s actually hugely fun (the trick is think of the swatch as an object in and of itself, not as a precursor to other things…that way, when the swatch is done, you’ve actually finished something).  But, it does mean I don’t tend to do a lot of other knitting.  I actually haven’t had anything but swatches for the next book on my needles for about a month.  All of which makes it very very hard to pepper the blog with pictures of stuff I’m knitting.

So I’m going to cheat.  I’m going to show you (some of) the swatches that have been consuming my brain and occupying my hands for the last month.  Now don’t go peering at them too closely, they’re all subject to change (and quite a few of them aren’t exactly blocked), but it is what I’ve been up to.  The good news is I’m more than half done with this phase.  A few more weeks of swatching mania and I should be able to actually knit something more substantial.
