Wee Hat the First
The first of the wee hats is done. I’m now madly in love with this whole concept. But really, what’s not to love.
First, hats. Hats are more or less instant gratification.
Second, worsted. Worsted weight yarn actually knits itself. You just have to nudge it gently and the finished thing falls off your needles.
Third, Malabrigo. This one requires no explanation, just look at the color. Colors. I’m helpless in the face of such temptation.
Fourth, stripes. Stripes are the (or at least this) lazy person’s answer to colorwork. I swear you never ever ever touch more than one yarn in the same row. You’re only ever knitting a plain old boring stripe.
Fifth, and perhaps most enchanting, the top. Look down there at the top of this hat. Tell me you are not smitten. It’s totally immodest of me to say this. I should either pretend that I totally knew exactly what it was going to do from the beginning, or I should pretend not to this amused, but no. I’ll go ahead and admit I think it’s awfully nifty.
And yes, Wee Hat the Second is on the needles already!
You have every right to be amused and delighted with the top of that hat – it rocks! Let me know when you’ve done the math for an adult sized one, I’m happy to test 😉
Hah, glad to see you guys like it too!
It actually more or less *is* an adult size. The recipient has a 22″ head, which is squarely in the reasonable adult size range. Adding an extra pattern repeat would easily take it to 24″, and leaving one out would get you to 20″, so I’m calling it good!
I may do the patterns up if enough people are interested, but really they’re pretty easy. You could likely just wing it!
Hunter,
The only garment I ever successfully knit was a hat for you when you were about a year old. There is naturally…a picture of you wearing in in one of the albums…or was that your favorite paperbag hat? Very well done as always!
Mom
Must have this pattern. Please?
Oh yes, please, a pattern. I have a couple of sets of twins and close-age little boys in my family, and they all live in cold places and need hats. I would love to make them all almost-the-same-but-not-quite hats! The newest twins only weigh 2 pounds, 11 ounces so far, so they can wait a while but the bigger cousins could definitely use them this winter.
And may I say that clearly YOU could wing it, since you did, but I couldn’t! ;o)
What a fun hat! And yes, the top *is* purely adorable!
I love the hat – colour work that only requires one colour at a time is my sort of colour work.
And a pattern would be great, whenever you get a chance to write it up.
If the time stamp on the blog entries are an accurate representation of the hat timeline…it took you two days to start/complete this hat? What is wrong with me? I’ve been working on my hat, with a knit stitch only, mind you, for a week! Though hubby did prefer the look of the stitch with size 5 needles and not 10 like I planned (it’s his hat). The stitches on your hat are gorgeous! What is the name of that stitch? I certainly can’t wing it, so would love instructions!
Time stamps are accurate, but it took 4 days. Cast on on the 29th, showed a progress shot on the morning of the 30th (showing what I’d done the day before). Cast off on the 1st, showed a finished shot on the 2nd (after it had a chance to dry).
But really, it’s out of worsted, which is why it got done so fast!
I’m not sure the stitch has a name, it’s just a happy accident. If I can find folks to model the hats for proper pattern pictures before they need to go off to the kiddos, I’ll do something with the pattern. Should be easy for the 22″ one (that fits The Boy), but I may need to hunt for someone to wear the 20″ one.
Beautiful…is it knit or crochet? I’d love a pattern! 🙂
It’s knit, the hook and I are not good friends!
