Underway
I cast on the hat yesterday morning. I have mixed feelings. I am totally confident in my gauge. I knit a damn fine mitt gauge swatch and measured very carefully. But I still feel uncertain. Sometimes I think it looks too big, other times I’m convinced it’s way too small. I think it’s because I don’t know what ‘proper hat’ looks like laying there on the needles. By this point, I am deeply familiar with what ‘proper sock’ looks like. I can tell within 2 or 3 rounds if it’s going to be too big or too small. Not so with the hat. This is my first hat so I have no idea what it should look like at this stage in the proceedings. Also, I don’t even wear hats, so I can’t even compare it to ‘reasonable sized commercial hat’ in my head. On a related note, how the heck does one block a hat? I’m fresh out of extra heads. The current plan features a balloon and some rubber bands, but that may prove to be untenable.
Depends a lot on the shape of the hat.
If it’s a tam/beret sort of a thing, I’ve seen many suggestions for blocking them on smallish dinner plates. If it’s more of a stocking cap, you might want a styrofoam head like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Lace-Locs-Inc-Styrofoam-Female/dp/B001BAN0FK
Oh.My.Wow. I’m so totally buying some heads. Or at least one head. Probably a boy head, as my head is big and so are the heads of anyone I’d knit for. You are officially my hero. How did I not know those existed?
Looks great so far – I love that yarn! Do you have a long circ you could put it on? That way, you could try it on and see how it fits 🙂
I don’t have any circs. My usual try it on method involves either lots and lots and lots of dpns or putting it on some extra yarn. When I put it on extra yarn it totally fits my head, so I think it will be ok.
