Privacy Policy

I try very hard to keep things simple around here, and that means I use several third party services to do things like run my mailing list and sell my patterns (because they do it way better than I can).  But the rules these days say I’m supposed to have a privacy policy, so I’m going to take a shot at it.

Mailing list: I use MailChimp, their privacy policy is here.  MailChimp stores the information you give them (your name and email address), and I have access to that and use it to send you emails.  You have to confirm your subscription (so no one else can sign up for you), you can always unsubscribe from the mailing list (there’s a link at the bottom of every email), and I regularly clean out inactive subscriptions (meaning if you don’t open my messages for a few months, you’ll stop getting them).

Direct pattern & ebook sales: I use Ravelry for all my direct pattern and ebook sales, their privacy policy is here.  Ravelry uses paypal to process their transactions, their privacy policy is here.  When you buy something, paypal and ravelry send me emails and they also keep a record of your purchase.  I use these to help you if you have a problem with your purchase and to do my bookkeeping.  Buying something won’t sign you up for my mailing list (though you may get a notification from me through ravelry if I later release an updated or corrected version of something you’ve bought).

Direct paper book sales: Occasionally (generally only when a new paper book comes out), I sell paper books directly on this website.  When I do, I use paypal to process transactions, their privacy policy is here.  When you buy something, paypal sends me emails.  I use these to send your book to you, to help you if you have a problem with your purchase, and to do my bookkeeping. Buying something won’t sign you up for my mailing list (though if you’ve purchased a book that includes a free electronic copy, you may get a notification from me through ravelry if I later release an updated or corrected version of something you’ve bought).

Indirect sales: There are lots of other places that sell my patterns and books (amazon, local yarn stores, vendors at fiber festivals).  They either buy books from me ahead of time, or send me aggregated monthly or quarterly statements with sales information.  I don’t get any of your personal information from them, and you should check with them about their individual privacy policies if you have questions. Buying something won’t sign you up for my mailing list (though if you’ve purchased a book or pattern that includes a free electronic copy, you may get a notification from me through ravelry if I later release an updated or corrected version of something you’ve bought).

Comments: If you leave a comment on a blog post, you need to provide a name and email address.  The name is visible with your comment, the email address is visible only to me.  I use those email addresses to get in touch with you if you’ve asked a question or won a prize in a giveaway.  Leaving a comment won’t sign you up for my mailing list (though I may send you a note if you’ve won something or asked a question).

Email: If you send me an email, I have the name and email address you used to send it to me and may use those to write back to you.  Writing go me won’t sign you up for my mailing list (though I may send you a note if you need help or if you just wrote to say something nice).

Website & cookies: Like most websites, this one collects a little bit of information about how and when you access the site.  That’s things like your IP address and your browser and operating system.
